I was working on some small jumps that I built for practice. One is a kicker jump. Great fun, rip off the top and get some good air, then brake and turn before the nasty dirt mounds. Of course I could turn the dirt mounds into decent berms if I had some dirt delivered. Second jump is a low short table top. I expect to clear the top and land on flat ground. I did well as far as getting a decent launch and getting 20 feet of air before the rear tire hit. What I didn't do was check the ground for small ruts in the landing area. Big mistake. Usually I rake the area for rocks and groom out any ruts. Anyway, the landing was good. What happen next went so fast that I had to walk the area this morning to determine what happen. I never saw the rut. I was a nastly little zig-zag of a rut with embedded rocks. As I landed, I started braking and turning slightly to the left. Very normal considering the riding area. This rut grapped my front wheel and my turn became a violent twist. Down goes my bike like a body slam. Landing on its left side (again ;) The stock handguards (flaps) collapsed. This cause the clutch lever to crush my ring finger. Not broken, but very swollen. I am going to get some real handguards. What really hurt is my back. First, let me say that I had all my gear on. Plus a special back protecter on top of my HRP flak jacket. My helmet received some serious gouges from rocks. Just think if that had been my head. My head and neck are fine. However, when I hit, hand trapped in the clutch lever, head side/back of helmet digging into the ground, my body had to twist in a most unusual way. I could feel my spine and ribs (at the spine) being pulled in a curve (radius) that exceeded my elastic coeffecient. :) I still got up, ask with wife to help push the BRP back to the shop, she took get my gear off and made me take a shower. Man am I sore, there are things moving around my left shoulder blade, ribs and vertebra that I didn't know could move that much and still be attached. I am getting better and things seem to be moving back into place. Will see a chiropractor on Monday (he is in Tucson this weekend). Wear your gear, check your landing area and make sure you have someone with you (or near by) when you ride. P.S. The BRP is OK.
