New bike to replace XR 100(help!)

hi everyone,
I currently own a 2001 XR 100R and though I love the bike, I can't jump very easily due to the suspension (which is approx. 5.6 inches of travel in the front and rear). Also, I am 5'4'' and weigh 110lbs so it's getting a bit small and the power is very tame.
My dad and I mostly do woods riding and there are many small hillclimbs allong the tight trails through the woods. taking all of this into consideration, what bike do u think would be best 4 me? I need something in between an mx bike and a trail bike i guess. I also have 2 buy this bike with my own money.

Would a KX100 be able 2 hillclimb though??? And wouldn't I be fouling spark plugs? If so, would i be able 2 help make it more worthy for the trails?

There are all kinds of mods you can do - flywheel weight, gearing it down, reeds.......they aren't cheap - gearing it down is about the cheapest way to start.

The women that I know on KX100's could climb hills with the rest of us but they had geared their bikes down and added reeds and I believe flywheel weights. I haven't ridden with them for a couple years and I haven't been around many KX100's or smaller bikes much.

My son rides a CR80E but he's been raised on 2 smokes and the trails. You might do a search on KX100 and CR/KX/YZ/RM80's on the site to get more information on how each one performs.

Have you tried the KDX for size? My son is 9 and can barely touch on one toe on the CR80E but, he rides fine in the trails until he tries to stop - that takes some planning.

My son has a CR80E big wheel,i guess thats what they call it...
He rides in the woods and tracks and never fouled a plug at all even in tight turns and bogging it at times going up hills..
I haven't looked to see what his bike is set-up at to do the things that he does. I'd like to check his bike out (jetting or whatever) but he wont let me touch it :think He wont even let me adjust his air screw.... He says
( I dont think so Tim) So i take my bike apart more than most,,i dont know...

I like the looks of the kx 100, but I'm also looking at the xr250, as well as the kdx 220(like my dad) so i got a few more questions!:p

XR250-would I be able to start this bike? Would it have the suspension to jump? Not mx jumps just the jumps that u find in gravel and dirt pits. Mind u some of those in the pits around us have some mx sized stuff. :)

KX100-Would a FMF Pipe give it a little more low end? If so which one? :think

KDX220-I don't have any questions except, what do u think? My dad said I could ride his next spring when the snow is gone so i can find out if i like it or not. ;)

XR250 for sure! It's VERY easy yo start, will be NO-HASSLE like your XR100, and has enough power to carry my 220 pound butt up anything I want. It can jump but it's a woods bike so don't exspect much.

I think the kx100 would be a nice fit and if I was in your situation that would be my choice, but its all up to you and how you feel on each bike.Maybe you should try to ride each of the bikes you are looking at first.;)

Thank you for your help every1. The xr250 and the kdx are still too heavy though for me. (My dad has a kdx and it is way too tall and i can wouldn't be able to pick it up after i fell on the trails after a day of riding) So i guess you're wondering what i'm going to do right? Well the KX is too much moola and i m 13 and have to buy it by myself so i'm going to keep my XR100 and then next year (2003) I can ride an XR 250 or a KDX.
Who knows? Maybe My dad will buy a KTM and sell me his KDX.:) :D

Lets face it, in the next year or two you are going to shoot up, so any intermediate bike will probably be a waste of time, ride that XR like you stole it, and then claim that KDX220 when it fits, then you will have a bike that can take you through high school and beyond. Don't let your dad get rid of the KDX, rather have him sell/trade your XR when he decides to get his next bike. My best buddy and I grew up on KDX,s and IT's (eye-tees) and they were great bikes, lasted for years, and we never outgrew them !

thanx. that's exactly what my dad said, instead of buying an intermediate bike and then sell ing it again just outgrow my xr and go up to a bike that i wont have to sell for a long time. But I would like my dad to sell his KDX (TO ME!):) cuz he'd give me a better price than any other person.

:) Can't beat free :D I am sure your Dad will give you a great price, better yet, a direct swap for the XR100 with a minimal cash adjustment would do the trick. Don't get rid of that KDX, you have a great bike there as it is. Maybe just add another KDX to the stable and you will have two great bikes in the family, can't beat a father and son team on two KDX's. :confused:

hmm i think that the XR 250 would be a way better bike for you when you do trail riding only thing is you might have a little trouble kicking it over...

OK i would have to say the TT-R 125 or 125L. They aren't expeinsive bikes and should have more power than the XR100. PLus the TT-R125 has many mods that can be bought to pep it up giving it more power and supension. I can say if you've only been riding for a year or two that going for a XR100 to a XR250 would be a little much because the deffernces are huge between the two. I can say having prevously owning a XR100 and going to a TT-R225 it was a huge differnce but i had over 8 years riding experince before this so that helped alot. Another good choice would be the XR200 not a powerful as the 250 but would be great fior the kind og riding you wanna do and should have more than enough supension.

when i got my xr i was debating between the tt-r 125l and the xr 100 and i chose the xr b/c the price was almost 1000 dollars cheaper and i didn't need to spend two summers working to pay off the bike!;) I think i like the kdx though by the looks of it and i can try my dad's in the summer (he said so) but i don't think i'll be going for any thing as small as a ttr 125 unless it's a mx bike. (not enough power or suspension)

ok dirt monkey, I was out riding the other day and some little guy was on a new ttr125 that is a cool little bike and he could do everything the big guys were doing. We also had 2 kids with us on those little toads you ride. They are a sad bike. Heavy for a 100. slow for a bike of any kind. and ugly.
And now you are going to hope to grow into a junker like the 220. LOL.
Get a real bike.:p :p :p :cool:

the kdx is an awsome woods bike and has great suspension! ask anyone who has one. and ya, the year 2000 model of the xr looks ugly but my 2001 is a nice bike, and i bet if the rider of that ttr with u guys was on an xr he would do just as good. the ttr isn't for me. It may be real but it's got a very unresonable price tag and the seat is as hard as rock.

RC (ricky carmichael) is 5'6'' and he rides a 250 mx bike, what makes u think i won't be able to ride a kdx in a couple o summers?:p As for getting a real bike, on my list of "real" bikes the ttr is the last in line. It's for kids who need the extra 25cc's to keep up with the others. For someone who owns an xr 100, well they are going to be much better riders when they are older because they are going to start on a bike that was made for "real" riders.
I'd rather have an atv than a ttr-125:p :p ;) :p

and when i ride i ride with a bunch of grown men. they ride, drz400 kdx220, xr250, rm250, and i can usually keep up to them unless we have to ride down a fire road when the just bomb it. I could probably keep up with a ttr125, :p

KDX-now that's a "real" real bike.

TT-R125-loser bike for former atv riders:uh:

Here's what I bought when I was in your position. I bought a used, '99 CR 80 Expert for $2,000. A pretty good price, well maintained and was a great bike when I showed up to look at it. Take a look at the Cr 80's, it's only an 80, but it jumps. My dad rode it and was scared of it. He made a turn in 3rd and it pulled a wheelie and that freaked him out. If you buy one, here's what I did and it works for me. Get 92 octane fuel, it helps you not foul plugs as easily. I went a month on one plug no joke. Get an FMF Turbine Core II silencer spark arrested for you trail riding. Even if it isn't required, it's still a good idea. Take off the stock 15 primary sprocket and put on a 14 tooth. That gives you alot more low end for trail riding. It won't go as fast in any gear, but if you're riding mostly trails, you don't need to go 60. I've tried all these things and they've worked for me. Oh, and I mix my gas at a 40:1 ratio. Kinda lean but at 32:1 I had spooge coming out the back of my silencer and all over the place and made a huge mess. You can pick up one of these bikes for about $2,000 for a good used one. They are great bikes and I think you would like one if you bought one. Peace out and happy riding!
