New guy from ABQ, NM (Bike Suggestions?)

I am 32 years old and want a dirtbike what do you think I should look for?

I am 5' 8" tall and weigh about 195 pounds. I have never ridden a motorcycle before, but I plan on riding trails and I may eventually take up racing. I am mechanically inclined, but I have never worked on bikes before. I am looking for a 4-stroke bike and I am open to any brand. I want something that I can learn on and ride for a while before I have to upgrade. Does anyone have any recommendations?

I see where you have gone to your User CP and updated information relating to your location. Grab a spot on the couch. We will do our best to hook you up with some fellow dirt bike enthusiasts. We have some real good folks in and around Albuquerque.

Check out the What Bike Do I Get... ? forum for great information on what dirtbikes might suit your needs and desires. There is a great group of folks that hang out in there always willing to help a newbie to the sport.

Check out the Team DRN Mile High Chapter forum for opportunities to hook up with some fellow DRNers. Scattered from Southern New Mexico to Northern Colorado, these fellows cover the extremes of riding in the US, from desert to 13,000 foot mountain passes.
