I need to vent first, then my question...I recently saw a few 'left over'/NEW 2001 RM 250s and a few New 2003s in the Trader. Some were here in central Florida, a few in Wisconsin, and one or two elsewhere. I went to buy an '03 from SKY motorsports in Lakeland FL, but they tried a BIG 'bait and switch' from their advertised price of '$3499 plus tax and a dealer fee of $499 (this price sounded great) They had confirmed this price on the phone twice, and I even had a printed ad, but they still refused to sell me the 2003 for the advertised and quoted price after I drove an hour to get there!. They then wanted to add another $500+ 'adjustment' because 'they made a mistake on the price' when they printed the ad, and when they told me the price on the phone (on two separate calls). The 'manager' then cussed me out when I asked them if there was dealer holdback or any other way that they could get the bike to the advertised/quoted price! What a great dealership...not. They will probably still quote a deal for you on the phone, but don't bite on it...it's a rip off waiting to happen!!
** Anyway, I had to vent... I am now looking for any new leftover RM250's. The reason that I want a leftover new model, is that I want a great price more than I want the newest '05. I will be using it as a fast trail bike, not as a racer. Anyone out there know of any dealers with deals on leftover '03s or older (brand new only). THANKS. -Todd

Not sure this helps you at all, being I am in NJ, but my local Yamaha-Honda dealer has a brand new leftover 2003 YZ250 identical to mine. I know you said RM, but how about a YZ. :) They had a price of $4,899 on it. $100 bucks less than I paid for mine there just about one year ago. I bought mine the day before Super Bowl Sunday 2004. Hope this helps, but it probably doesnt considering you are in Florida and you want an RM. Mike :ride:

you are not really saving much money, since when you come to sell the bike, it will be 3-4 years older and worthless, plus, no one wants the 01-03s, the resale on Rms is poor, and older ones is terrible.

look for an 04, a great bike and light years better than the older ones, it will make a much better trail bike too.

***SKY POWERSPORTS*** That is the name of the great RIP-OFF DEALER. They have two branches, one in Lakeland Florida, and one in another nearby town.

I am not real worried about re-sale since I will be trail riding the bike as opposed to racing, and I can keep the bike a lot longer. I have seen NEW leftovers advertised for the same price as a used one from the same year, which one would you rather have for the same money? I might end up getting a nice used one, but I liked the thought of a new one. By the way, the $4899 leftover YZ sounds like way too much for a leftover 2003. I really like the RMs and some of the KTMs, but a deal on any of the MX style 250s would be fine with me. I don't think my skill level is good enough to tell the difference between a 03 RM and a 04 RM, or even the difference between a RM and a KX if I was blindfolded (it would be hard to ride like that). I think that I will have fun on whatever I can get the best price on.

'bclapham', what is the difference between the '01 '02 '03, and the newer RMs? Even the dealers had trouble explaining the differences. The only differences that I found were slightly re-tuned forks on the 2003, and minor power valve (or whatever the proper name is on a RM) changes over the years. The dealers have all pretty much told me that as long as you get the newer frame (from like 2000 or so and up) the bikes are all pretty simular. Anyway, I am still looking for a 'deal'. I have to sell my '98 DR350 (dirt model) first. Its a nice bike, but a little heavy, and I miss the power of my CR500, so its time for something new!

well, the 04 was one of the best bikes in class and the 01-02s were one ofthe worst. The suspension on the 04 is lightyears better, and the 01-02s were known to have a lot of failures on the topend. Believe me, you would be able to tell the difference.

If you get a chance I would go with the 03. I purchased one last year from a local pro that had both an 02 and a 03 for sale. I was informed that both bikes were very quick but in stock form the 02 was slower than the 03 and the 03 was faster than his 04 kx250. I havent had any problems with my bike and Chili had bought the 02 so you can ask him what he thinks about his bike. The bike rips and in 03 they also came with a free top end and gasket kit. I dont know if you still would be able to get that but it wouldnt hurt to ask.

$4899 seem wayyy to much for any 03 model. Look around more. In Feb. '04, I bought a new '03 KX250 for $3995 plus TTL.

A brand new bike $3995 and only 1 year old(model year wise)! That's what I'm talking about! A good port job and there won't be any stock 05's putting down more HP...

I see guys spending $6,000 plus for a 250cc dirtbike...Rediculous...

Yeah....Look around...I''m surprized at the prices people are paying for 05's let alone an 03' model....At the price they were quoting you for that RM should be able to buy a new 05'.

If there are still leftover 03 models you should have no problem getting one for less than $4,000 OTD...

I saw a pretty good deal on an '04 RM250 last weekend. It had a sticker price of $4,395 on it. I have no idea what that place charges for set-up, though. The shop was Andy Stacey's Naperville Suzuki in Naperville, Ill.
