Okay so my new thumper won't be here for a little while but im getting prepared and I came accross this link for break in procedures.

http://www.mototuneusa.com/break_in_secrets.htm

Can I get comments? What do you guys do? Do you use this method?

I am totally new to a 4-stroke and don't want to mess up, I figured I would run it slowly for the first 15 minutes, then maybe just get hard on the gas for a breif moment. But im just not to sure,

I know there are alot of threads out there that give procedures, but what do you guys think about the procedures in this link?

And if you don't agree what do you guys do?

thanks !

This one has been hashed out before. I can't remember what the thread was called. I bet it's been a year or so since it was up here. If I remember correctly, this method would work OK.

I have a new CRF coming as well and I have no intention of breaking it in the way he suggested.:D

LOL, So Rich I am guessing by your above quote that I should follow the manual for my new YZ450? :)

Is there any other advice you can give? I feel fairly confident in following the manual but tips are always good.

Thanks Lou and Rich! :thumb:

I always suggest people bring a brand new motor up to temperature (a few minutes of easy roll around riding) for the first time, shut it off and drop the oil and clean/replace all the filters and frame oil line strainers. Fill it back up with mineral oil (not synthetic) and change the oil/clean filters 2 more times in the first hour or so of running. This may see like a lot but in the past Yamaha has seemed to leave a lot of trash behind in their machining and assembly process, so these initial oil changes help to clear that out. These initial oil changes aside following the manual procedure is a pretty good idea.

For the record, whatever that's worth, for break in, I ran easy for about 30-45 minutes, then tossed the stock oil filter and all its metal shavings into the trash, changed the oil and pulled the frame strainer screen (it was clean). I probably change my oil after every 1.5-2 tanks of gas. I pull and clean the oil filter every other oil change. Might seem overkill, but something just draws me in to do it that often. Must be the force of the dark side... I've been running Yamalube 4 (mineral) since day one.

One thing to remember is Pat's advice is mostly for race/high performance rebuilds, not new bikes where ther's more at stake than just ring seal. I've been to his his "shop", seen his work, and seen the results. He's a no-nonesense kinda guy while won't bull*hit you. I've asked him about his breakin and porting stuff when I was rebuilding my GPz. He told me to just go ahead and clean up the casting flash cuz smaller ports didn' t help on the KZ's he worked on.

What he doesn't mention is how much development time he puts into all his stuff. He practices what he preaches.

I used to work for a major small engine manufacturer dynoing engines, breakin was simple, 5 minute idle, 5 min high speed no load, 1/2 load for 1/2 hour, calibrate the dyno, stabilize oil temp(usually 15 minutes or so) and it's broken in.
