I have an F 150 with a 5.0 L engine (non triton) and it is a little sleepy pulling our camper with bikes in the back. Does anyone have a triton 5.4L who could tell me the difference in pulling between these two engines. I ask because Amy is getting a new (er) truck and I thought it may be a good idea to upgrade our towing capacity. She does wants an excursion though, I’ll have to work on that... those F250 crew cabs sure look nice! ;) now if I could only talk her into a diesel
:)

The 5.4L will pull anything you feel like towing. Fuel economy will be only slightly better at best compared to the 5.0L. I have a 4.6L and a 5.4L and the 5.4L get 12-14mpg towing and maybe 15mpg when empty. This is in a 4X4 F250 with a 411 rear end.

Sounds right to me. You could try and talk her into a Powerstroke Excursion! :aj:

From what I understand, the 05 Excursion will be the last year and supposedly only come in a diesel.

I've owned the 5.0, 5.4 and now a 7.3 diesel. The 5.4 does okay as long as it doesn't have to rev and shift a bunch...if it does plan on less than 10mpg. In hill country it runs out of steam...go w/ the diesel if you can swing it. You'll get 16-17mpg towing plus it will cruise @ 80-90mph and never even think about downshifting.

03 F150 4x4 FX4....last mileage check was 12.2 mpg. That was a freeway trip with no load 85-95 mph across the desert.

Heaviest load was about 4500 lbs. It did ok with the od turned off.

WE :ugg: went window shopping today, mostly so that I could sell the pickup idea. She made all kinds of excuses for not getting a pickup ( some of you may say truck.... :nener: ) but I think that she knows what she wants ( funny thing about her :yeehaw: ) I found out that she already has HER Excursion picked out, so I guess I should have went riding instead of window shopping, what with winter coming and all . I did talk her into the 5.4 L though, thanks for all the input and as far as hills go, we live in WI and what you guys call hills out west we call mountains.

Well we brought the Expedition home yesterday, it has a lot more power then the pickup so I'm sure it will do fine. Thanks again for all the input.

I have the 5.4 in my 04 150. Just got home from stillwater and got about 12mpg with a full load and pulling trailer. Two weeks ago I drove it to Texas on business with no trailer and got 19. Wade is right...it runs out of steam in the hills.....seems to be a little short on torque. Makes good hp and accelerates hard as long as it is wound up :aj:

Open up the air intake with your choice of aftermarket systems then add a mild chip and free flowing exhaust and it will make a noticable difference. Then again you could always just "pressurize" it :)
