Those bikes came with a little rubber sleeve around the horizontal part of the kickstarter that helped with traction. Mine was lost long before I was given the bike. We were too poor for me to have boots so I always rode in tennis shoes. I don't think a week passed as long as I owned that bike that my leg didn't look like that.
