Just thought I'd pass this along! I will not EVER drink another DIET COKE!

Subject: FW: Don't drink or eat this poison

> Diet drinks...
>
> In October of 2001, my sister started getting very sick, she had stomach

I've never been a fan of the Aspartame, and I personally don't use it, but I wonder if this is a backhanded advertisement for that Stevia herb mentioned in the next to last paragraph.

Not inciting a flame, or disagreeing with you, CNM, just playing Devil's advocate here . . .

Chain letters almost identical to this one have been going around for quite some time. Check here: http://hoaxbusters.ciac.org/HBUrbanMyths.shtml#aspartame

a snippet of that article:
"The title of the article claims that the Multiple Sclerosis Foundation and others are suing the makers of aspartame. However, the Multiple Sclerosis Foundation has disavowed any knowledge of a problem with aspartame and any relationship with the author. The letter also claims that it causes "memory loss, confusion, and severe vision loss" among diabetics but that has been debunked by the American Diabetes Association."

You can check things like this out (if you believe either source) at www.urbanlegends.com , www.junkscience.org etc.

That story may not be true but Aspartame is not good for you. It has given many people problems. My wife was having severe headaches and drank everything with NutraSweet. Some one asked her if she used Aspartame and said it might be the cause. They gave her an article that laid out several problems. Sure enough when she stopped using it, the headaches went away. When she started using it again the headaches came back.

I wish I still had a copy of the article on the stuff. There are all kinds of problems associated with it.

RM, check the liinks at the bottom of CNM's post. I think the last one has the list of 90+ symptoms. I am currently running my own little experiment with the aspartame laden beverages.

If you read the article on hoaxbusters they admit that headaches may be a problem with some people.

Here is what the Multiple Sclerosis Foundation has to say about it:
http://www.msfocus.org/aspart.htm

The American Diabetes Association:
http://www.diabetes.org/main/community/info_news/news/aspartame.jsp

The FDA (note the .gov website):

And finally one more site to check out:

Its up to each one of us as individuals to decide what we believe. Just offering up some info for those interested.

I'm tipping back a diet pepsi right now. I'll let you know if I have any symptoms.... unless of course I forget due to the memory loss.

Seems to me these "people" are always coming up with something. Sometimes alcohol is bad, sometimes it is good. Sometimes butter is good and margarine is evil and sometimes the margarine is good and butter is evil.

If it tastes good, eat it. Eat as much as you want until you no longer crave it.

I put these stories/warnings right up there with global warming.

Nothing personal.

What to think? Well, it's not like we can't do without NutraSweet. So if in doubt and you drink lots of diet sodas, put it to the test. Try giving them up for a few weeks and see if you notice a difference. It's hard to argue that if people start feeling better soon after they give up some of these foods, there's a problem with it.

Personally, I heard this firsthand from a food chemist I know several years ago. In addition, my mom was also a head nurse and did not like NutraSweet from the beginning, always telling me that sugar in moderation is much better for you than this chemical. So I've tried to avoid it but undoubtedly it's been in some of the foods I've consumed over the years. Worrying excessively about it would probably be as unhealthy as consuming a little bit every now and then, so I just avoid the obvious things like diet drinks (not just sodas but also things like Country Time lemonade).

I am interested in this, being a diabetic I've noticed that since contracting diabetes (7 years now) my thoughts aren't as clear as they used to be, I attributed it to the diabetes but I now wonder if it has something to do with all the aspartame I've been consuming?

Hey, not trying to open a can of worms here. I just thought it was interesting reading. Whether it is 100% true, not entirely maybe even not remotely. It did make me stop and think about what chemicals I'm putting in to my body on a daily basis. For me personally, I will be more careful and cautious. Just a personal thing for me.

CNM, I don't think you opened a can of worms. These things get passed around every so often and I just try to inform everyone that they are on the list of urban legends and hoax's. I'm sure everyone can and will make their own minds up as long as they have both sides of the story.

I try to avoid real dangerous things but unless you go WAY out of your way you wouldn't believe what people put into their systems (unknowingly). Almost every store bought/prepackaged food has all kinds of things that 'supposedly' cause all kinds of problems.

As far as diet soda goes - I doubt that regular soda is real good for us either. Tea and coffee for SURE aren't good for you.

I guess I kinda fall into the 'moderation' mindset where most things are harmful in large enough quantities and few things are really bad in moderation.

how about ephedrine?

the latest fad at our workplace is "dietary supplements" with the brand name "Advocare". Several of the more popular offerings from this multi-level marketing company have substantial amounts of ephedrine, also known as legal speed. This is one of the key ingredients in crank! But they try and head off the anti-ephedrine crowd by claiming it has been "de-natured"...right...

So I get to work around several office ladies all cranked up on this stuff, jabbering a mile a minute. Then I hear how they get so used to it, if they don't take it they are so "down" and tired they can't hardly work. Sad! I did a bit of research on the stuff, definitely on the FDA warning/watch list and has been know to cause heart problems, especially if taken with caffeine.

This company "Advocare" has people trully brainwashed...it's so expensive the only way most people can affoard it is to be a dealer and sell the stuff...yea, just like illegal drugs...also, none of the people selling the stuff have any real knowlege of the product and it's effects, just what they were told by the person the next step up the pyramid.

I have taken ephedrine in college (to stay awake and study) and in cold medicine. Yes, it makes you feel "up", but can't be good for you to take on a steady basis.

Copied from a post from ArizonaTrailTalk.com:

WATER

1. 75% of Americans are chronically dehydrated.

2. In 37% of Americans, the thirst mechanism is so weak that it is often mistaken for hunger.

3. Even MILD dehydration will slow down one's metabolism as much as 3%.

4. One glass of water will shut down midnight hunger pangs for almost 100% of the dieters studied in a

University of Washington study.

5. Lack of water, the #1 trigger of daytime fatigue.

6. Preliminary research indicates that 8-10 glasses of water a day could significantly ease back and joint

pain for up to 80% of sufferers.

7. A mere 2% drop in body water can trigger fuzzy short-term memory, trouble with basic math, and
difficulty focusing on the computer screen or on a printed page.

8. Drinking 5 glasses of water daily decreases the risk of colon cancer by 45%, plus it can slash the
risk of breast cancer by 79%, and one is 50% less likely to develop bladder cancer.

and now for the properties of COKE

1. In many states (in the USA) the highway patrol carries two gallons of Coke in the truck to remove blood

from the highway after a car accident.

2. You can put a T-bone steak in a bowl of coke and it will be gone in two days.

3. To clean a toilet: Pour a can of Coca-Cola into the toilet bowl and let the "real thing" sit for one hour,

then flush clean. The citric acid in Coke removes stains from vitreous china.

4. To remove rust spots from chrome car bumpers: Rub the bumper with a rumpled-up piece of Reynolds
Wrap aluminum foil dipped in Coca-Cola.

5. To clean corrosion from car battery terminals: Pour a can of Coca-Cola over the terminals to bubble away the
corrosion.

6. To loosen a rusted bolt: Applying a cloth soaked in Coca-Cola to the rusted bolt for several minutes.

7. To bake a moist ham: Empty a can of Coca-Cola into the baking pan, wrap the ham in aluminum foil, and bake.

8. To remove grease from clothes: Empty a can of coke into a load of greasy clothes, add detergent, and run
through a regular cycle. The Coca-Cola will help loosen grease stains.

It will also clean road haze from your windshield.

For Your Info

1. The active ingredient in Coke is phosphoric acid. Its pH is 2.8.

It will dissolve a nail in about 4 days. Phosphoric acid also leaches calcium from bones and is a major
contributor to the rising increase in osteoporosis.

2. To carry Coca-Cola syrup (the concentrate) the commercial truck must use the Hazardous material
place cards reserved for Highly corrosive materials.

3. The distributors of coke have been using it to clean the engines of their trucks for about 20 years!

What's it going to be? A Coke And A Smile or some good old water?
