I got my '02 300XC in December, and like it a lot. Gas Gas bikes really handle well and they feel very low, light and easy to flick around. Fits smaller riders better than current KTMs. My 300 weighs 220.5 pounds without gas. :) I put an LTR jetting kit in it to clean up the jetting and it runs clean. I never rode the 250, but my brother has and he said they have a more pronounced midrange hit than the 300. Good quality parts like a KTM, but don't expect a service manual like the KTM! ;)
Don't sweat the numbers. I don't think mine is any lighter than a 250 EXC, but it feels much lighter and more agile on the trail. Its the way the weight is carried in the frame. You'll understand when you ride one.
I weighed the bike myself on an electronic scale we use for shipping UPS packages at work. It is pretty accurate, plus or minus a fraction of a pound. I got tired of everyone saying they feel light, and I got curious. Glenn is right though they feel lighter on the trail than when you go to lift them on the stand. Very compact frame design, they could give KX's a lesson here, they do it better than the company that invented the modern perimeter dirt bike frame!:p
BTW, 1996 KLX 650's weigh 297:( pounds with no gas and a slight smattering of dust should anyone in the universe care...
Very happy to hear this, I was hoping the claimed 218 pound dry weight was not to far off. So these bikes feel light because they are :)
Usually the claimed weight is far off. I did weigh a few of my and my pals bikes:
KX 250 1999 no gas in tank, no tranny oil
KX 250 1988 no gas in tank 105 kg.
XR 400 1999 apprx. 4 litres of fuel in tank 130 kg.
WR 426 2001 apprx. 6 litres of fuel in tank 125kg.
DR 350 1999 apprx 4 litres of fuel in tank 131.3 kg.
