Pain in hands after riding

This is the first time this has ever happened to me. Last Thursday I was riding and it felt like I had sprained my fingers when I would pull in the clutch. I've never had this before, so what would cause it? At times I almost stalled while going REAL fast due to not being able to pull the clutch in and tapping the rear brake before the clutch was disengaged.

Ouch! This will likely get more (and better) responses in the "Training, Recovery, and Fitness" forum. Moving...

BTW, Good luckwith it!

I used to get this every time I rode/raced, it usually only took a few laps. I did some forearm and hand exercises for a while but it didn't seem to help. That was earlier this year.. The problem just seemed to disappear. I still get it occassionally but it's rare. I assume it's from holding on too tight and fighting the bike.

I have gotten this before pretty bad, it only happens when I ride for a long time and or in colder weather. It feels like arthritis but worse ( I hope). If that is what atrhritis feels like, I'm not looking forward to it in my golden years:( .

I get this too. Sometimes after a long ride, I'll have to ride using only my palms because my fingers literally won't move. I've been trying to exercise them a little, and it seems to be working. Hope that helps.

I've had this many times also. I don't know if this has anything to do with it or not but it seemed to me like this affect was reduced when I started taking potassium supplements.

Can any dietary experts out there confirm that a lack of potassium can cause (or increase the effect) of something like this?

I have got this before, but it seemed the more I rode the lesser and lesser I got it, till it just went away. :think

I've had this symptom before as well. I believe it is caused by gripping your handlebars too tightly and not letting your hands relax. Don't grip too tightly and "fight" the bike, just relax and let the bike feel like it's part of you:think Oh well I think that's how you do it:confused: You'll get used to it and sooner or later the pain will go away and quit after riding a lot, it's just like everything else, once you do it many times, you barely notice it until it no longer exists.:)

This is usually caused by holding on to the bars to tight, try not to steer with your arms on straights (that are bumpy) lean back, grip the seat with your legs. Same reason why you get arm pump. I would not need handle bars if I did not have to turn. And for this happening in the cold massage your arms and hand to keep them warm before you race/ride. If you have anything else I can help you with e-mail me @ MR_Bullet@hotmail.com:confused:

hand pain

Perhaps vibration dampeners like Faasst Co. makes or some quality rubber mounted triple clamp product could help with that a bit?

Grips with a softer compound helps compensate for hand pump also, since it cushions you better than hard compound when you land on jumps and other things:confused:

I have some experience with this. Hope it helps.

If you feel like your finger/s are cramped and you have to physically pull them out straight then you might have a problem. According to the Dr's this is called "Trigger finger". It is most common in folks over forty who use mechanized machinery and tools, electrical saws and what not.

I have had this problem since I was about 15, I first got it after running a chain saw all day. I typically only got it after 6-8 hours of work so it really never bothered me, yet about 4 years ago I got a desk job where I'm not using my fingers everyday and now it takes about 30minutes for my hands to lock up, it takes about 1 hour on a bike or motorcycle.

What I have been doing is taking 4 advil before I do anything strenuous.

What happens is there is a serious of tendon sheaths in your fingers and base of your fingers,(these prevent your tendons from bowing) In my hands the sheath at the base of my finger swells up and won't let the tendon relax or slide through, thus my fingers are locked.

On the 28th I'm having a plastic surgeon slice these sheaths(Left hand only for the first round) in order to prevent it to open up when the swelling starts.

This is supposed to fix the problem. I have a severe case so IMO would just suggest the Advil(anti-inflammatory) before you ride.
The more vibrations the faster the swelling causes the cramping.

Hope this helps.
