Hi, Im new to the forums, and dirtbiking and I've been into dirtbikes for years. Im 13, and my parents are very protective about this kind of stuff for some reason. I play football, and alot of tough, head cracking sports, and my parents still say NO to a dirtbike. :bang: They say money isnt the issue and I still cant figure why I cant have one.
Supprisingly my mom came up to me one day and said that she wanted to be a race car driver when she grew up and I was like WHOA! Then why arent you...and she said the opportunity never came. So I said why don't you give me the opportunity to do something I love.
She had no comment...and to this day I still cant figure why i cant have one.

If you spent your time to read this I thank you alot...can I have some advice on what to do?

My parents let me start riding at age 5, but would never let me race. (Now I'm 33 and living my dream. LOL).

I always got hurt worse on bicycles than I did on motorcycles.

Maybe you could talk your dad or mom into taking you to a race at a nearby trak (if there are any). One thing I wish your parents could discover is the atmosphere at the local tracks. It's really cool. I feel totally safe leaving my bike and gear out in the open and unguarded while I watch the other races.

There are few other places where I would feel comfortable doing that.

The kids are usually pretty cool and fun to be around. The adults are always very friendly and willing to help you load and unload, give you advice, etc. . .

I bet if you could get them to take you to a race and they could see what its like and what the people are like, they might get more favorable to the idea.

Then again, some kid could crash and be life-flighted to the hospital . . .

I'd take a chance and see if they would take you. It's usually like $10 to get in.

By the way, I'd hardly say it's much more dangerous than football. I went to 12-15 races last summer/fall and only saw 3 people seriously injured. Broken arm, knee injury and broken collarbone. There are typically 150 entries at each race, so that's nearly 2000 individual motos with 3 serious injuries - at the RACES.

Hang in there and keep talking about it,make good grades,and get a summer job!!! Tell your parents that you would like to earn the money to buy one for yourself. Maybe that will get there wheels turning!! Get a couple of dirt mags and leave them lying around for them to see.

Good advice but make sure that they are not showing Pastrana doing a back flip, might defeat the purpose.
I started riding at age 12, didn't race until I was 38. Live life with what you have and work towards the things that you want. Be patient.

LOL. Also avoid letting them see the "Travis and the Nitro Circus" DVD's at all costs!!

i would bring them to a local track...but i live in rhode island and there are none lol...but u guys have great advice =) :)

It appears there is only one in R.I., but there are in other states nearby - and R.I. is not very big . . .

Welcome to the site. I hear you on the lack of riding oportuities in RI. That may be changing in the near future. Check out www.nedirtbikes.com, and www.riohva.org , RIOHVA is working on getting the state to open up trail systems to bikes (quads too) and other Off road vehicles.

I didn't know about some of the areas that robwbright, I'll have to check a few of them out.

There are a couple of other tracks in Connecticut that you should check out as well. One is Connecticut River Motocross in Rocky Hill, it is about 20 minutes outside of Hartford and is a practice track that is open throughout the week. I havent rode there in a few years now since I moved out west but it was one of the nicest groomed and maintained tracks I have ever ridden in any state, the soil is good and they have an installed sprinkler system for the dry weather. Another you should check out is Central Village which is in North East CT just over the RI-CT border so it is probably closest to you. This is a private club owned track so I have never ridden it, but it may be something to look into if you are interested in joining a club.

Robwbright provided you a link to Mototown USA above, that is a brand new indoor facility that they are builing in the Windsor area, again about 15-20 minutes outside of Hartford and would be something to look into. It is supposed to be open this spring I believe, last time I was in CT I went to check out the building but it was just in the beginning stages so I have no info to report but their website has a good bit of info.

The only other Track in CT I know of is Milford Riders Club but once again that is a private club owned track as well.

I had wanted a dirt bike since I was in grade school.

It never happened. My mom was adament in her anti-motorcycle views, and we didn't have near enough money to get into the sport.

I just bought my first bike a little less than a year ago on my own, right after I turned 19. I pay my own way in all of it, and it's very fulfulling to support my hobby. It's not cheap at all!

Just keep doing good in school and working hard and it will eventually pay off.

There are probably other tracks - I've never even been to New England, but found all that stuff in 15 minutes of searching. . .

There are plenty of Tracks in New England. I only know of one in RI that is legal. btw. Rhody Rovers is a motorcycle club (off road) they have no track that I know of. Ramp City sounds like either a skate park or a bmx park. There are no MX tracks in Warwick.

Dude, you have to show them what is in it for them. If money is not an issue then try to talk them into doing it with you. As a parent nothing brings me greater joy than learning with my children. Approach it from the perspective of a family activity.

Here in Oklahoma you can take a motorcycle safety course even if you don't own a motorcycle. See if you and dad/mom can sign up for one together. Start printing off some of the stories posted here at dirtrider.net about family vacations spent riding dirtbikes and all the fun.

I went through the same thing with my parents. I don't know what finally got them to relent but I surely am glad that they did. I got my first motorcycle at age 10 and have been riding off and on every since.

As odd as it sounds people get seriously hurt doing everyday activities, mostly because they are not paying attention to their surroundings or because they do nothing to mitigate the risk. My 5 and 7 year olds both ride, but the activity is never taken lightly. Every time they swing a leg over a bike/4-wheeler they have long shirts and pants, hemlets, gloves, goggles and chest protecters. If they ride skates or bicycles they wear protective gear. It gives me great piece of mind to know that I have done everything I can to protect them and prepare them to take serious activities seriously.

I begged and pleaded with my parents for about a year before I finally got one at age 12. Some things just take time...haha. Dad was easy as he had been riding all his life, but mom was not for it at all. Once I got it I was still never allowed to race but at least I could ride. Just do your best to how responsibility, keep your grades up, do your chores..ect and hopefully they will come around.

I started riding at age 10. im now 14 and my mom wont let me race even though i grew up around mx and my uncles raced. she said that i cant race because the guys ride rough but im just as good and could ride rough too even though im a girl. hang in there or find someone that will teach you and go behind their backs(not the best idea but thats what im gonna do)

P.S. ask your parents if you can ride in pit fights to stat. pit fights is where you race mini bikes its not as dangerous and im aloud to ride in them in motorama!!!!! :)
