Mike Metzger wins Supermoto in Phoenix

Looks like Mike "The Godfather" Metzger is taking this new Supermoto stuff serious. The defending Summer X and Winter X Games freestyle motocross champion traveled to Firebirds Raceway outside of Phoenix on Sunday and won the premiere "Open Extreme" class over the likes of Scott Russell, Mike Cinqmars, Jason Pridmore and others. The SB2 Supermoto U.S. National Championship race was held on a sixth-tenths-of-a-mile track, about 60 percent of which was on asphalt. Metzger took advantage of the rough moto sections, but his knee-dragging on the pavement impressed everyone. He won easily on his ECC Racing Honda CRF450R after "Mr. Daytona" Russell pulled out.

According to Racer X's Eric Johnson, who attended the event, Metzger is seriously considering the competing in the inaugural AMA/Red Bull Supermoto Series, which will begin this summer.

And the word in the Supermoto pits was that none other than Jeremy McGrath picked up a pair of bikes from KTM this week for some potential Supermoto racing.

Jeff Ward beats MC and The Metz in Supermoto

Seven-time motocross and supercross champion Jeff Ward beat eight-time SX/MX champion Jeremy McGrath on Sunday in an exciting Supermoto race that was held in conjunction with the AMA Superbike race at California Motor Speedway in Fontana. Ward, riding a Honda CRF450R, used a late-race pass on McGrath, who was riding a four-stroke KTM (with red-white-and-blue Thor motocross gear).

Steve Drew finished third on another Honda, followed by ECC Racing's Mike "The Godfather" Metzger. Metzger, the reigning X Games freestyle motocross champion from both Summer and Winter X, came back to win a lightweight main event from Rich Alexander, who was fifth in the Open class. And Jimmy Lewis, the super-versatile Cycle World editor, won the Novice class at the STTARS-produced event.

Neither McGrath nor Ward would say if they plan on competing in the upcoming Red Bull AMA Supermoto Series, which begins in July at Laguna Seca. But with Ward still heavily involved in auto racing - he is set to race the Indy 500 at the end of May - McGrath might be a better bet to continue in this growing sport.

Earlier you mentioned something about the track being 75 percent blacktop, does that mean that there are jumps or dirt or somethin like that? That may be a stupid question, but i do not understand.

Supermoto is serious competition, whereas FMX is a freakshow. I'd like to see Supermoto obliterate FMX in terms of popularity.
