I'm a fairly frequent flyer (ok 118 segments YTD 2001) and it all depends on when you want to go.  I just checked BHM to KC and ATL to KC.  Usually, leaving from a non-hub city is cheaper than a Hub city.  Don't ask me why, but ATL and CVG can be some of the most expensive cities to get in and out of even though they can be cheap places to change planes on the way to your destination.

I'm very proficient with the Delta web-site.  Everything depends on how flexible you are with you travel plans.  I was able to get Birmingham to KC for $222.  That's with Sat stay over, and 14 day advance noticed.

However, I was able to pull up some U (that's the cheapest) fares out of Atlanta to KC for $143.72 same parametors as above, restricted ticket, non-refundable, 14 day advance purchase, Saturday night stay over.

I gather from this post that this is personal travel, not biz travel so I figured you would want to stay over Saturday night anyways.

That's the best I can do without knowing your exact travel dates.
