Purpose of the front number plate loop?

My brother and I were just wondering what the purpose is of the loop on the front number plate (around the handlebars). We've both been riding for quick a few years and haven't seen the loop serve a purpose. I figure it's incase the bolt breaks that holds the number plate.

Can anyone shed some light on the subject? We're a little slow out here in MT. :coocoo:

Keeps the cables from getting hooked behind the plate on serious fork compression (ie, forks go down, creates more cable slack, forks rebound, the extra slack could get hung behind the plate. That would be bad.

Rumor has it that Oakie rarely sees anything past first gear so his forks don't compress all that much......but he is right!

So, in cases where the cables route on the same side as the lever they originate from the loop isn't really needed? I'm just getting pickey. Thanks for the insight.

Edit: I guess the importance is on the brake cable.

I took a nasty spill because my brake cable came up and over the plate, since I apparently forgot to strap the loop on again. I just landed a big jump that pretty much bottomed out my forks then shortly after I hit the ground my brakes locked up and I went over the handle bars. Ouch!! I hope I never make that mistake again!

I'll call BS on that! I know for a FACT that Okie's forks compress quite a bit.....................when he sits on the bike. :p
