Hello - Yes you are paying too much for an older bike at US$2000.  For that sort of money you could get a 96-98 bike over here.  The best thing is to get out to some trials events in your local area.  Most people will usually let you have a bit of a putter around on there bike after the trial has finished, so go and try out a few different brands and sizes.  Each brand has its own personality and strengths and weaknesses, and its just a matter of seeing which suits you the best.  For instance the Montesa has really high gearing and a five speed gearbox, which is really that they've dropped the low crawler first gear that the other brands still have.  GasGas seem to me to be a taller bike than may suit you if you are over 5'10" tall etc etc.  The other thing is to check out the dealers in your local area, as the support of a good dealer is pretty important.  Especially when you consider that parts and service are not as wide spread as for normal dirt bikes.  Good luck!
