reb. setting before dissy.for KYB

On a 01 YZ 250
Where should the rebound setting be before removing the top cap?
Full soft,full hard .or does it matter?
Also for assy
The manual says to record the setting before screwing the cap onto the dampening rod.
I was just unclear of where to set the adjusting screw.
I'm replacing the fork seals for a friend who is low on $$$$$

To make sure the cap bottoms to the rod before tightening the jam nut. I would back it out all the way, so as to make sure both forks are the same length.
