What has to be removed to do a top end on a 2001 220? I'm in the process of checking the piston on a friend of my sons KDX and would like to know if it can be done without removing the engine. I haven't worked on any other 2-smokes but KTM for the last 15 years so any info would be appreciated, thanks.

Yes you should be able to do it without removing the engine. It should take you no longer than 30 minutes to have the top end apart if you've rebuilt bikes before. They're very easy to work on.

The only thing you want to do some research on is the powervalve and its timing/removal/installation. I'm sure someone here could help you with that though.
