hey guys i'm looking at selling my Kdx 250 1992 and upgrading to a more modern kdx 220 as my kdx 250 needs new piston kit soon and i dont wanna spend any more money on it!, is there a noticable difference between the two bikes ? eg weight power handling ? i noticed the newer bikes have standard forks where the kdx 250 has upside down forks which are generally better ? anyways basically wondering if its worth upgrading! cheers

well i was doing research on this too before i bought my kdx. The kdx250 is heavier than the kdx220. I have also heard the suspension is not as good because of the bikes weight. If you can get a good deal on a 220 get it.

The 220 doesn't have nearly the power potential of the 250, especially low-end torque. And the 220 isn't that much lighter, either. The smaller bike does handle better, though.

im am not positive about the kdx250 compared to the kdx220 power. But ride a kdx220, it is such a nicer feeling bike.

another bike i'm looking at is the KLX300R there only 5 kg heavier then the kdx 200 going by the 2006 specs on the kawasaki site and it has upside down forks! never had a 4 stroker always loved 2 stroke power band!

I have a 2003 KDX220, and so do 3 of my friends, we all love them, had my forks redone for a heavier rider and put a pipe on, just enough power for me. I have a friend that bought a KLX300R last year new, he loves it, I rode it, I like my 220 better, his 4-stroke seems to have less response out of the hole.

I rode a 300 and it has a very different feel than the 220 or the 200. The 220 has more low end torque, though it revs out quick, but you shift up sooner and ejoy the torquey feel. I think also the 300 seat-tank transition sucks. Plus, unless you have a hot-start kit on it, you never want to stall the darn thing, You'll definately get a good leg workout kicking the 4-stroke. Stick w/ the 220, much better choice. IMHO

The forks on the KDX250 and KLX 250/300 bikes are really not that great. They have no rebound adjustment and do not flow very much oil through the valving.

Picking up a set of KX inverted forks will do wonders for the KDX bike.

The 250 will have more power potential than the 200/220. Really either bike is outdated. Last updates in the early 90s. If you want something more modern, look at the new WRs or CRFx bikes. Or KTMs are great and still offer 2 strokes

how do you know, that??
How do I know, what?

I've owned many bikes over the years, including a KDX 200 and a 250. The 250 is a detuned version of the '89 KX250 engine, and can make in the neighborhood of 40 hp with a little work. Try getting anywhere near that amount of power from a 200/220. The 200/220 does handle better, but they aren't that much lighter. And a little suspension work does wonders for the 250s handling.
