I set my sag to 102mm, and noticed that my free sag (distance from bike on stand to bike standing on ground with no rider) is at 40mm. Should i try a softer or stiffer spring to try and get it more in the 25mm to 30mm range while keeping the race sag at 100mm? my rear springrate is a 5.5KG
I weigh 200 with full gear and 180 without, I ride mx intermediat to expert level on a 02 Honda crf450.
Thanks fro your help!

I would think that spring should be fine for your weight. Like Marcus said set you rider sag to 95 with that spring then you will have close to the 30mm of free sag.

Hi, I also own a CRF, and Ithink you might want to double check your sag reading. I weigh around 155-160 with riding gear on, and I get about the same readings for sag as you do. I am now running a 5.3 spring which works out fine. Stock (5.5) should be fine for your weight....maybe even a tad too soft.

This is an intersesting post. When I had my CRF, I ran a 5.2kg spring, and at 95mm sag, I had 20mm of free sag. I weight 215lbs. And at 100mm, I had a tic over 25mm free sag. When I tried a 5.4, I had over 25mm of free sag at 95mm race sag. One thing CRF owners need to know is that the rear spring is actually a progressive rate. Or as Steve at White Bros call it; "active rate". Suppossedly starts at about a 4.8 and goes up to a 5.2 at best. Wonder if the '03 run an "active rate" as well.

I have had a pblm getting my sag set right on the '02 450F. I'm 173lbs w/o gear and while at Washougal I stopped by Pro Motion and talked with Dave. We experimented with a few different springs and with a 4.8, 5.0 and the stock spring we still only got 3.5" of sag with 1" of static sag.
He didn't have a 5.2 to test so we went with the 5.0 . This seems to be about right if you go by my shock spring for my '99 400, it was 5.2.
But, from the posts above it seems that I maybe too soft but why wouldn't I get the correct (or even less sag) out of a 4.8? We did this experiment in his shop, on level ground. He did tell me that the stock spring is indeed an Active Rate spring. So, I am running .44's in the front and a 5.0 in the rear.

Let me know what you think.
