At honda hills they wouldn't let anyone run studs for safety reasons, and they're supposed to be illegal in AMA competition (from what I've heard). Last year a guy showed up with his tires fully studded and they wouldn't even let him ride the course, he was frantically pulling screws and make it out halfway through the race I believe.
