You come through passport control and after a cursory look at your carry-on luggage, you are then in Germany and can just leave the airport if you like. I have often been stuck in a line behind a bunch of Mid-Eastern types in passport control in Europe....
In Latin America I have been searched more frequently, but superficially so.
I have not flown anywhere since 9/11..... my first will be to Vegas in 2 weeks.

Let's hope that security is improved but is more efficiently handled....
