I lived there for 2 years. Its a blast, and beautiful country. SD in the black Hills has the largest groomed snowmobile trails in the country. And when there is know snow you know what us dirtbikers love to do. There are tons of logging roads and old trials to explore. I can't say for sure what marked legal and whats not. but its fun. Also on the way into sd from Ill. your going ot pass the Badlands national park. Definatly worth seeing clay, moonlike, grand caynon type scene. But not as big. on the rapid city side off hwy 44,Ii believe, there is/was a leagl riding area through parts the Badlands. Its a good trip. just watch out if it rains. the clay of the badlands will clog your tires and they will become slicker than *******. Be sure to visit deadwood, and old west looking mining town on the outsidand casinos on the inside. very, very cool. Have fun.
