Is it actually possible to change the left crank seal without splitting the cases and removing the crank first? If so, how do you get the old seal out etc. without risking damaging the crank shaft?

Thanks?

you just need the puller to take the stator off
you wont need the puller to put it back on
no other tools are needed gotta go!!

I'm assuming you have a CR125? , The tool your wanting will remove the FLYWHEEL or ROTOR, behind this is the STATOR. Remove the 2 bolts holding it onto the case (10mm?). Then you can get to the seal. Use a small screwdriver or "pick" and very carefully pry the seal out. They can be stubborn sometimes. When putting the new seal in make sure to put it in evenly, if you have trouble you can tap it in using the old seal as a buffer to avoid damaging the new seal.

On CR's and YZ's the seals are put in from the outside, on KX's you have to split the cases, they go in first before the crank. Not sure about RM's.

Just work carefully and you should be ok.

I never understood what they were thinking when they designed this. Why would they force you (me) to tear down the entire engine just to replace a rubber seal??? Then again, Suzuki designed an engine that required dissassembly to replace waterpump seals...:p
