Supercross Blows

I was just reding Rick Siemans article about what he thinks of what he calls"stupidcross".Is he ever right.
The health of off-road motorcycling and motocross is NOT measured in supercross attendance.It is mesured in off-road bike sales,which are twenty(no kidding) percent of their 1973-1983 peak.
I believe it is all this jump happy crap,parents see it and don't want their kids involved.
Rick describes it as "jump,jump,jump,u-turn,jump,jump,jump.Looking at it from a distance it looks rather ridiculous.Does it take a lot of skill?No doubt about it.Good for the sport-no way.
The hourly ambulance runs at local tracks are plenty of evidence for me.
I like to jump.I'll do doubles,some triples.But nowadays,with a big pack of riders around,getting tired,jump faces rutting and changing?No way.Motocross injuries are up,way up,in frequency and seriousness of injury.While the sport will always be inherently dangerous,there's a big difference between measured,calculated risk and just plain dumb.These tracks,for amateurs,are dumb.

CONCORD GRAPE PIE

3 1/2 c. Concord grapes
1 c. granulated sugar
4 tbsp. flour
1 1/2 tbsp. butter
1 tbsp. lemon juice
9 inch pie shell, (recipe follows)
Streussel topping (recipe follows)
Wash, drain and stem grapes. Remove skins and simmer pump for 5 minutes. DO NOT add any water to pulp. While hot, press pump through a sieve (or food mill) to remove seeds. Combine strained pulp with skins. Combine sugar and flour; add to grapes. Blend in lemon juice and melted butter. Pour into pie shell and cover with struessel topping. Bake at 350 degrees for 40 minutes.

PIE SHELL:

I 2 c. flour
1 tsp. salt
3/4 c. shortening
5 tbsp. cold water
Mix flour and salt in bowl. Cut in shortening with pastry blender until pea - sized chunks form. Sprinkle in water and mix until it will form a ball, DO NOT OVER MIX. Divide dough into 2 parts. Roll out thin onto floured surface or between wax paper. Press into pie plate. Makes 2 crusts.

STRUESSEL TOPPING:

3/4 c. flour
1/2 c. granulate sugar
1/3 c. melted butter

This is the recipe I have always used Ivan.....I think I'm going to try yours next time I get the urge to bake :laugh:

Concord Grape Pie

4 1/2 cups Concord grapes (2 pounds)
1 cup sugar
1/4 cup all-purpose flour
2 teaspoons lemon juice
1/8 teaspoon salt
1 unbaked pastry shell (9 inches)
STREUSEL:
1/2 cup quick-cooking oats
1/2 cup packed brown sugar
1/4 cup all-purpose flour
1/4 cup butter or margarine

Squeeze the end of each grape opposite the stem to separate skins from pulp.
Set skins aside. Place pulp in a medium saucepan; bring to a boil. Boil and
stir for 1 minute. Press through a strainer or food mill to remove seeds.
Combine pulp, skins, sugar, flour, lemon juice and salt; pour into pastry
shell. Combine oats, brown sugar and flour; cut in butter until crumbly.
Sprinkle over filling. Cover edges of pastry with foil. Bake at 425'F for 15
minutes. Remove foil; bake 20 minutes more or until golden brown. Cool on a
wire rack. Yield: 8 servings.

That pie does sound good! If any of you "extreme" types who think jumping is riding become paralyzed because of an accident on one of your favored tracks,perhaps someone will feed some of it to you.In between getting suctioned,of course.
Maybe if some of you work in a level one trauma unit,you'd have a little different perspective.
It's almost always the same story for us,folks.Harley or sport bike rider,no helmet,dead or paralyzed.Under 25 male.ATV or dirt bike,jump related accident.Are there other types of serious injuries?Yup,about 5%of them.
Maybe not so funny if it's you or one of your buds. Doug

I personally have no desire to ride a supercross track because of:

A.) My age--crashing hurts more after 40, and the bones heal up slower.

B.) My riding ability---I am an off-roader, and I jump off of stuff, not over stuff!

 

This however has no bearings on the enjoyment I get out of watching others risking life and limb conquering obstacles in a manner of which I can only dream of.

I know the limits of what I'm willing to risk, and each person should also choose accordingly the risk level they are comfortable with. With greater risk comes greater reward/achievment, but also greater pain if you screw up!

 

That sour-grape pie sounds like a great treat after a 'DIRTBIKE' ride!:laugh:

Just what exactly do you ride and why? So far you have aversions to SX champions that race cars, good-looking women, SX, local MX tracks, Harleys, sport bikes and under-age girls in photos/articles REALLY get a rise out of you. Hell as much as you bitch, I'm sure I left something out-these things are just from the past week :silly:

I have. ;) Many times, during 'training'. Sorry. Can't help ya. Not a single motocross or SX injury (KU Medical Center, Kansas City. Truman, Kansas City. UCSD Medical Center, San Diego, CA (5 years).---the latter covers the entire southern half of the state, including all the ATV'ers @ Glamis transferred from El Centro.

Gunshot wounds? Yes.
Dirtbag drunks rolling their cars? Yes.
Suicide attempts? Yes. (Especially the burn unit, for some reason).

Nope. SX injuries, are typically managed by Bodner in the Astericks Van. :laugh: I talked his ears off @ Vegas about it. These SX injuries are rarely as serious as you think. Even JBS's brainfart injury was just a concussion and broken collarbone. Big deal. I've been hurt worse crossing the street. :silly:

Funny, I was thinking the other day about starting a thread about 'coming out of the closet'. For some reason, I seem to enjoy SX MORE than MX, and I'm kind of embarassed about it. I think it has to do with the spectacle of it all, the concentrated smell of racegas, and the closer 'bar to bar' racing. I just don't enjoy listening (over the internet) to MX like I do SX.

Now riding one or the other is a different story. You couldn't catch me (yet) anywhere near an SX or AX style track. My legs and ankles start threatening to break just looking at those tracks from the stands.

Let me help[some of you with the details you skim read over.
Harley Riders and sport bike riders were not criticized.Not wearing helmets was.It just happens these two groups ,not wearing helmets and suffering serious/fatal head injury are very common where I work.
Beautiful women were not criticized,nor were teen age girl friends.Having them featured in magazines already devoid of substance wasjust like a celebrity car race wasting space.
Supercross was acknowledged as taking tremendous skill.The supercross obstacles for amateurs is what is being criticized.
I'm 46,03 RM250.I race hare scrambles,enduros,old school MX tracks.I like off-road tours,been to Baja,Costa Rica.(Costa Rica is bitchin')
I'm an RN,trauma center.I was no MX pro,but was an "A"MX rider until 6 years ago.I got a rare hole shot,doubled into the triple.I got passed by a nice guy I knew well,he went for the triple,was short,crashed violently,and was killed instantly from a broken neck.I stopped right away and was first there.

That day the guy who died was not alone at the track.His wife was there.and his two year old son.He was 25.
The ugly part about helping these folks in trauma is their families,and it can get real hard to take.
I guess the problem I have with the beauty queens is I work with so many women who are not only great looking,but smart,work 40 hours a week,and actually do something substantial for people.
How old are you,14? Got a job,a mortgage,anything like that?

That is why I gave you a recipe. That is old school newsgroup whenever a troll comes around you give them a recipe b/c you know they are going to jump back in and try to rekindle an argument... one in which they only want to see their words said and the only reason they read others is to pick out single points to just keep on starting more Sh@t.

I've done a lot of research on deaths and injuries in our sport. All of them pale in comparison to the deathrate of minors in baseball, not just in total numbers but in overall percentages.

The sport has inherint risk and it is a parents responsibility to educate their rider and our responsibility to help when we can.

Your responsibility to spout off stuff about an agenda you are carrying around is not wanted nor necessary. All you are doing is trying to start an argument b/c that is what you do. You have no intention of listening to the other side.

I suggest that all other replies to you be recipe's b/c I have found that to be the only successful way to get a troll to move on to somewhere else.

Everything involves RISK. Last I checked nobody was forcing people to catch air. If a track has a layout that you feel is dangerous then don't ride it. Pointing to HS as being a safer alternative is silly. I have a friend who watched his dad unload into a tree and a branch went under his arm and through his heart, he was wearing a CP. I have another buddy that was practicing and had done this climb out of a creek several times, the last time he attemped it he looped out and ended up in the water with his upper leg snapped. A long carry to the ambulance and then an air lift got him to a trauma center. Getting out of bed in the morning involves risk but then so does not.

I can see where you're coming from dud, but put Rohrich's proverbial freakin' CORK in it. I'm not bandwagoning this deal, either.

My opinion, as somebody in medicine, is that those huge jumps are scary as hell, but not particularly dangerous (from the standpoint of life or death--broken bones? Who gives a shat?)

I've asked before, but can anyone find any data on the number of injuries on big doubles/triples vs. other types of riding? I'd like to see some objective information on this. I'm usually pretty good at finding this stuff, but can't.

Recall that a LOT of people have been killed or seriously mamed riding desert, and that's FLAT land. I don't recall any deaths in SX, but may be wrong about that.

I don't know DUG and this is the first thread of his I've read but I agree with what he is saying. We have a few local SX races in Colorado every year and its nuts. They have at least two Ambulances on hand so there will always be one at the track. The last one I went to my buddy crashed and his bike took out a spectator. I went to the ER with him because they thought he had a broken neck. The ER was full of guys from the SX race. There had to of been 15 to 20 people in dirt bike gear at 11:00 pm in the ER. It was a sad sight. It realy made me think about SX and how little I like it. I don't like what it has done the the sport I grew up with and love. My wife plays softball two times a week and have never seen anyone get taken off in a meat wagon at one of her games.
