I guess I figure that either I'll get hurt only enough to be out less than 3-4 weeks, or it's really serious and I'll be tapping into my long term coverage.

My out-of-pocket benefit costs went up 63% last year, so I chose to ditch the short term coverage.

I'm sorry d.u.g., but it seems to me that you are still missing the point. What I have gathered from all of these other posts (excluding the pie ones, those have given me something else to gather :confused: ) is that most people think that if it's too dangerous, don't do it! Some amateurs are good enough to be able to handle those nasty triples and other dangerous obstacles. If they ONLY made nice, fluffy, smooth amateur tracks, how can anybody progress to the pro level? There has to be somewhere where they can practice some of the harder stuff so that they're ready for those bone crushing SX tracks. Otherwise, when somebody moves from the amateur level to the pro level, they are suddenly in a MUCH more dangerous position than they would be in if they would have had another level to practice on. Again, people need to know their limits! Accidents happen to the best of them...I've seen some really talented people make a mistake and get hurt. It happens. There is no way to prevent it. Watch MTV, idiots abound everywhere!

SX is not hurting bike sales. It's ignorant parents (and other people) who see the SX and think that's all there is to dirtbikes. They need to do some research. Ignorance and laziness are hurting the sport...not to mention the bike prices skyrocketing in the 80's. Minibike sales have been going WAY up in recent times, though. Yes, some of that can be attributed to the minibike dads, etc...but they've gone up nonetheless, and I'm sure that most of them have a youngster in the saddle at one point or another.

All I'm trying to do is see if I can somehow help an understanding come through. I understand where your opinion comes from, and I understand your point of view. I'm sure it must have been incredibly traumatic to see your buddy in that condition...but it has skewed your opinion greatly. Fortunately, most of the others here (myself included) have not had the experience that you have. I'm terribly sorry that it happened, as I am with anybody who is seriously injured or killed in any sport. The fact remains that it IS a dangerous sport and people WILL get hurt.

Whew, now I want some of that PIE! :thumb:

Thats was a very well wriiten letter,and you made some very good points.
What I saw that day has skewed my opinion a lot,I sure admit that.
It just seems that it's getting hard to find a motocross track without it having supercross type obstacles,and even if you have a new kid who's going to roll them there is a big risk of getting landed on,etc.,when the track operators have things like open pracice,etc.Kids,unlike most adults,can be pretty mean,and will make fun of the"slow" or new kid,not to mentiom maybe his dad raging at him.
One thing I've seen that was pretty cool,there's a track here in Ohio,Scenic Highlands,where they have some classes where you are not allowed to jump anything.Those turned out to be some really tight,fun to watch races.

Actually, they are not hurting bike sales as much as simply not having enough places to ride. I run into people all the time who say "if I knew about this place I wouldn't have sold my bike." Most newbie riders don't know where to ride b/c a lot of shops don't know... they just sell.

With land that we are allowed to ride on dwindling it is important for us as enthusiasts to help educate the bike shops. I know of several who are now carrying lists of tracks and trail systems with numbers to call. They hand them out with new purchases or if someone just asks.

I understand the POV as well. My best riding buddy busted himself good on an easy double that even I could do. His bike hickupped and kicked and he had brain swelling and was off the bike for 6 months.

Last year there was a guy who died at our practice track. I wasn't there but still knowing about it and knowing the owner and the people who were there to help I learned a lot about the situation.

The jump he got hurt on was a fairly safe one that you could either jump up on top of the table top landing or go for it. He got out of shape and had the throttle pinned on landing. Bad all around after that.

I don't disagree with DUG wanting safer tracks.

I disagree with him blaming tough tracks for anything other than being a track for a target market.

Another good point!

I DO agree that we need to have nice, easy tracks where beginners can ride without being in serious peril, but you really can't wish for all of them to be that way. I'd like to try motocross someday, but I know that I sure as heck would want to have a nice easy MX track to start out on.

I've ridden in Alabama at Monster Mountain, a couple places in Georgia, SC, Illinois, Oklahoma, NC and Michigan.

Every track I've gone too had either a track that you could roll the big stuff or had rounded faces or had an easier track to go along with the more technical stuff.

From what I have seen (and I admit it is limited in comparison to some others) more and more tracks are trying to provide multiple tracks so they can have multiple skilled riders be comfortable and safe.

Those are all good points guys.
We're lucky in Ohio,because we do have some great places to ride.If any of you are traveling and comong through Ohio I'd love to hear from you.I live about 10 minutes from Mid-Ohio,where there's always good car and bike stuff.I'd take you to this practice track I was talking about earlier,it's really a '10' in my book.You'd swear you were in the freakin'Belgian Grand Prix !
This guy even has paths around both sides of all jumps so if someone doesn't want to roll them they don't have too.

NOW you are making more sense, dug. I am also a member of mid ohio. I have been to scenic highlands too. I like the track. Shoot, give me a ring too if anybody is ever in ohio. Dug, you ever been to Sunset Ramblers? Thats a good track in Galion on 598. If you ever race there, tell me before you go. They even have pie sometimes at the food stand.

The Adelanto Gran Prix, which runs out here in the SoCal high desert every year has a mud hole jump that requires a lot of commitment to make it. The track designers put an alternate line in which takes you through a series of whoops should you decide the mud hole jump is not for you.

I had a good roadracing crash at mid ohio in 94 and DUG I agree with what you have to say, it sounds like you guys have a bunch of little kids on this board.

Nobody disagreed with DUG's original point in that it is better to make the amateur tracks safer. However, he started it as a troll b/c prior to this post he has not been much of a contributor.

The biggest point is that it is up to the person to take personal responsibility on any track they get on. That is not a childish idea... that is a mature idea.

Let the track owners design it the way they want and then the consumer will decide which one they want to go to.
