AURORA, Ill. (May 2, 2005) – Clear Channel Entertainment’s Motor Sports division announced today that the THQ World Supercross GP/THQ World Supercross GP finals pre-race press conference from Las Vegas’ Sam Boyd Stadium Friday, May 6, will be broadcast on Supercross LIVE! (www.supercross.cc.com) at Noon. Featured at the press conference will be the 2005 250cc THQ World Supercross GP/THQ AMA Supercross Series champion Ricky Carmichael, Yamaha’s Chad Reed and Honda’s Kevin Windham, who are currently second and third respectively in season point standings.
After five successful years, Supercross LIVE! produced record-breaking numbers in 2004-2005 with more than 700,000 listeners, logging on to www.supercross.cc.com from their homes each Saturday night during the supercross season. Saturday night. In 2005, newcomer Jason Weigandt and long-time host Jim Holley have put together a banner year with 200,000 new listeners this season.
Carmichael, of Havana, Fla., who has a record 12 AMA National championships, became the first rider in history to win both the THQ World Supercross GP and THQ AMA Supercross Series championships in the same year. A third place finish last Saturday night at Houston’s Reliant Stadium secured the 2005 THQ AMA Supercross Series championship.
Also in the 250cc ranks is African-American superstar James ‘Bubba’ Stewart, who is the 125cc class’ all-time winningest rider. Stewart, of Haines City, Fla., who sat out most of the season with a broken right arm suffered at Phoenix’s Bank One Ballpark, has three wins on the season.
In addition to the top 250cc riders will be newly crowned 125cc Eastern Regional champion Grant Langston and Western Regional champion Ivan Tedesco. Langston and Tedesco, who ride for Kawasaki, will race for the Dave Coombs Sr. East/West Shootout title with the rest of the circuit’s top 125cc riders, including KTM’s Nathan Ramsey and Josh Hansen and Suzuki’s Davi Millsaps.
Langston and Millsaps share three 125cc Eastern Regional THQ AMA Supercross Series victories, while Tedesco has two race wins on the season to Ramsey’s three. En route to winning his first-ever 125cc supercross championship, Langston, a native of South Africa, led 37 laps, earning two Butterfinger Crisp Holeshot Awards.
Last year, Honda’s Kevin Windham, of Centerville, Miss., won his fifth THQ World Supercross GP/THQ AMA Supercross Series race at Sam Boyd Stadium before 37,942 fans, but Yamaha’s Reed, of Dade City, Fla., captured his first 250cc championship. Kawasaki’s Stewart, of Haines City, Fla., won the Dave Coombs Sr. 125cc East/West Shootout, capping off another stellar season for the then 18-year old.
