i just resently bought a RM 250 1990 and a few questions...

1. what oil to fuel ratio in the gas do i use?

2. my rear shock twists a little why is that?

3. what isa good site i can find aotof partsf or the bike other than rockmountain and motosport.

4. When i pull the clutch in the bike still wants ot go like the clutch is just BARELY is still ingaged is this normal?

5. what are some defaults on the bike or thing to watch out for and trick or tips on the bike.

1.) 40:1 is general practice. I always run 32:1 though to squeeze a little more life out of the pistons.

2.) Bad/worn bushings?

3.) Denniskirk.com bikebandit.com

4.) This is normal.

5.) Check the wheel, swingarm, and head bearings for play. Change the oil. Go ride!

ok lil off topic but please help me onthis one.

I bought this bike used for $700 and the rear rim in bend along with some spokes.....can i buy a pro-wheel rear rim(19-2.15) and pro-wheel spokes.....will this set up just lace right up with the stock 1990 rm250 hub?

Not sure about the spokes working with your stock hub but your #2 question on the shock twisting is normal. That year bike used spherical bearing on both ends of the shock and it will let it rotate a bit. As long as there is no vertical movement with a clunking sound you are OK.

I just sold my 1990 RM250 becasue it was a pain to find parts for it ... Good Luck !

I use to own a 1990 RM-250. To me in many ways it was the perfect bike. The only problem is that it was hard to start sometimes, but honestly, I never had any major problems with the bike.

Here's what it should look like:

Because you have a yellow frame, yours may actually be a 91, but it's still very close to a '90.

1) I always used 40:1 and never had a problem.

2) The shock twists because it uses sperical bearings top and bottom, not rollers, so that's just a normal deal.

3) Go to who ever gives you the best price and service. Just like any other bike.

4) Make sure that it's adjusted correctly. Sounds like it needs to be adjusted a little bit more.

5) It's an old bike, go all out on the maintenance over the winter and you'll have a great bike for many years to come. This means a new piston and lubing up the suspension.

ok i have yet another question for you guys....

how do you checkthe tranny fluids to see if there enough fluid.

how often shouldi change the tranny fluid(i ride mabe twice a week since it winter).

how do you change the tranny oil.


sorry for all the question i just wan't to mess somthing up since it hard tofind parts for this bike.

If your clutch is dragging a little thats normal, but if it's dragging so much that you have a really hard time putting it in neutral and the engine stops right away, and you have it adjusted right, then the plates are probably warped. To check your trans oil level theres probably a bolt on the side that you can take out, if oil comes out there is probably enough in it, but I personally never go by that. The more you change the oil the cleaner its gonna be inside the gearbox, I change mine about every 5 rides but a lot of guys change it more than that. To change it theres a bolt on the bottom of the "case" just unbolt it and let the oil drain out, you can lean the bike side to side to get it all out, also I usually ride the bike first to agitate the unwanted particles into suspension (my belief). Lastly you need to determine how much oil to put in, it may say on the side of the case, if not then its in the manual or someone on here might know.

ok well i still need to know how to see how much is in the tranny case.

and when i drain it how much oil do i put in the case?

the manuel the guy gave me is useless it all water damaged.

Sucks about your manual! :(

650ml for change, 750ml for overhaul.

To check the level, there is a weep plug back near the kicker. It has an aluminum washer on it. With the bike sitting straight up, remove it, and oil should trickle out the hole.

im kinda figuring you can't just go to walmart and pick up a toub of any old tranmission fluid

There is no cut and dried answer to that. Search this site for 2st trans fluid, and you'll see what I mean.

FWIW, I use Type F ATF, or whatever 10-40ish oil I have laying around.

what is the year spand on part i can usefor example 1990-1995 mabe i can use the parts on those years of bikes

Generally, it will differ on each part. Manufacturers change some parts each year, even if it's not a makeover of the model. Check an online parts fiche for a part you need and check other years to see if part # is the same.

My gosh….how fun it is to reminisce! In 1993, I walked into Honda/Suzuki North in Dallas, TX and they had a brand new, left over stock, 1990 RM250 marked down to $2800. I had to have it….and I went home with it that same day. That was one of the best bikes I have ever had! It was my first 250….and I thought it was the fastest dirt bike in the world at the time... :yeehaw:
