Swapping out a crank, need lots of input asap
Either the bearings aren't fully seated in the cases or on the crank. It's best to use a puller to pull the crank into the bearings rather than beating it with a hammer. The peak loads caused by hammer impacts, even a soft faced one, can cause the balls to dent the races which will lead to brinnelling. That said, several folks here have used a hammer (soft) with no ill effects. So if you can't cobble together a puller, tighten the case screws to get some pressure on the crank. If there's much of a gap between the cases, don't get carried away tightening them down or you'll risk cracking the case. With pressure on the crank, tap both ends of the crank with a soft faced hammer to help seat it. Again, don't be a gorilla and beat the crap out of it - use common sense. Spin the crank and it should be loosening up. If the case screws weren't all the way tight, tighten them and repeat the process.
