I guess I am to slow

To experiance the noise factor. My problem with rolloffs was the first time I used them thekid soaked me good in a mudpuddle and when I pulled the cord to clear it seems some was below the film. Once thiis happens forget the goggles:mad: . He keeps a set in the trailer now only for dry dusty days

A word of Caution when using Rolloffs.. Don't treat the lens with Rain-X. The Rain_x will cause the film to adhere to the lens and it wil be impossible to advance the film. I seem to rememeber Rolloff making a piece that mounts on the top of the goggle lens to help divert the water, etc off the film.. The best goggles I ever had I bought back in the early 80's.. Can't rememeber the name, but it had super hard lens that was next to impossible to scratch.. If the lens got muddy etc, I just wiped it off with the side of my finger, or a bandana tied around my wrist and it was clear again.. Wish I could rememebr the name of the Goggle manufacturer.. Jones???

zilla... who is memory challenged at the moment

I have used neither but i was wondering with roll offs, does the fact that it only clears a small strip instead of the whole lens bother anyone? How much is it for a roll of roll offs compared to getting some tear offs?

I've never tried Roll offs, but don't the canisters limit your peripherial vision even more than the goggles already do?

Both tear-offs and roll-offs work extremely well, depending on the conditions you are riding in.

For muddy conditions there is no substitute for roll-offs. When set-up correctly they work awesome, but they do restrict you peripheral vision a tad.

For most situations I find that the roll-offs are overkill and just use tear-offs. I have only experienced the noise from them a couple of times and I was going mach-5. I thought it was kinda cool, taking me back to the days of putting a playing card in the spokes of my bicycle to make motor noises.

I like to have a couple pair of goggles. One set-up with roll-offs, and a couple set-up without. I only use roll-offs in muddy conditions, mainly 'cause I hate the thought of recking a pair of $40 goggles in a crash if I really didn't need to be wearing them.

TEAR-OFFS ALL THE WAY (at least for me)! I wear Smith Warps and definately prefer tear-offs.

Tear-offs:

PROS - cover whole lens, rarely fail, easy to pull, available everywhere, pretty cheap

CONS - too many makes vision blurred

Roll-offs:

PROS - similar to having lots of tear-offs

CONS - fail easily (broken canister, film flapping behind you, broken string, jam up, etc...), kinda expensive, mud can get in between film/lens, doesn't cover whole lens, not readily available, harder to pull string, block vision a little bit, a little more weight

No, your eyes are close enough to the lense....it doesn't bother me at all.

I like the Roll-offs, but they do have some disadvantages:

- The "system" costs more, so the initial investment is higher.
- Water under the film can be a problem, both with vision and with pulling the string to advance the film (film gets stuck to the lens)
- Every so often the little thingy on the end of the string pulls off and you're screwed. Replacement canisters are nearly $20.
- Have to put some duct tape over the latches where you open the cannisters, otherwise they'll break at some point (tree branches/leaves like to grab at the cannisters). Can't buy the canister covers separately anymore, so you end up having to buy a whole $20 cannister.

Despite this, I still like them better than tear-offs because the tear-offs get blurry if they aren't perfectly clean when installed (the more tear-offs, the worse it gets). And when water gets inbetween the tear-offs, you're screwed (there was some special tear-off lense that could be bought, along with special tear-offs, that was supposed to keep out water but it didn't work that well for me). At least with the roll-offs, you've got a fighting chance to advance the film a few times and get the water to work its way out. I do use the Smith "visor" things that stick on the lense. Contrary to what seems to be the intent of the visors, I run the tape on top of the visor, not undernearth. The visor (when used as intended) might keep out some water, but the film will still stick to the lense and make the advancement nearly impossible.

Also, at muddy races I will tape a tear-off over the roll-offs, so that if I get hit with a bunch of mud at the start, I can pull off the tear-off and then use the roll-offs from there on.

This tread was brought back from over 2 years ago! It's funny cause in those 2 years, i still haven't decided on which I like more, the roll offs or the tear offs. I'm getting a new pair of goggles soon and i'm going to go with the tear offs this time in hopes that my lens will not scratch so soon.

I like the Roll offs except in the rain. if water gets under it does suck the film to the lens the trick is to pull the string as soon as a bunch of water gets o there so it doesnt have a chance to work its way behind the film. I always laugh when my buddy uses his tear-offs and I see a big wad of all of them come off at once.... which is often. Which is also a factor for me, More trash on the trail.

As I learned on the slippery side of the ramp at Tebbetts, sometimes they'll just pop open with a decent crash. As the course worker was so kind to point out, 'hey, dude, your roll offs popped open'. yeah, thanks Einstein...

Roll Offs. I'm not a fan of tearoffs because of the trash factor. Maybe MX is different, but for Enduros and Hare Scrambles I just can't get behind the idea that it's ok to litter the woods with pieces of plastic film.

I don't use either, I just tuck a couple clean cloths in my pants so I can wipe my goggles incase they get extremely mucked up. Like BRush, I refuse to litter while racing cross-country and harescrambles. I might try roll-offs when I have some spare money, but right now I'm happy with the cloth.

He's installing them wrong. You have to bend each one over and put the next one on. So no matter how many you have on you can only grab the top one. Once that one gets ripped off theres nothing holding the next ones tab and it flings out ready to grab.

To Roll-off Or Tear-off?

FOR MOTO-TEAR-OFFS,BECAUSE YOU CAN YANK YOUR TEAR -OFF WHILST BUSTING-BIG OVER THE GAP,JUST LIKE THE PRO'S (NOT THAT i WOULD KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT THAT) BUT SERIOUSLY ROLL-OFF'S RULE!IN ADVERSE CONDITIONS THEY CANT BE BEAT-DUST-MUD-RAIN-ETC.THE THINGY TO KEEP YOUR "ROLL OF FILM" DRY IS A "VISOR" AND YES IT GOES ON THE OUT-SIDE OF YOUR ROLL OF FILM TO KEEP THE "MOISTURE" ON THE OUTER SIDE OF YOUR ROLL-OFFS.NOT TO CHANNEL IT UNDERNEATH YOUR ROLL OF FILM WHERE IT WILL WELD YOUR ROLL TO YOUR LENS WHICH AS SOME OF YOU HAVE EXPERIENCED,REALLY SUCKS!YES,THEY DO OBSCURE PERIPHERAL VISON SOMEWHAT,BUT YOU SHOULD ALWAYS BE LOOKING FORWARD,AS OPPOSED TO LOOKING AT WHATS IN THE CORNER OF YOUR GOGGLES.YEARS AGO,I NOTICED A PRETTY FAST INDIANA PRIVATEER AT RED BUD WITH A RUBBER BAND ON HIS HELMET,VERTICAL FROM NOSE GUARD TO UNDER VISOR.I SAID TO A FRIEND,WHATS WITH THIS SPODE?TO WHICH HE REPLIED "TOO MAKE HIM LOOK FORWARD/DOWN THE TRACK-NOT AT THE TIP OF HIS FRONT FENDER!FOOD FOR THOUGHT.WHAT WAS THAT GUYS NAME?CONNIE SOMETHING?FAST DUDE!DAVEY COOMBS MENTIONED HIM IN HIS COLUMN ABOUT ECCENTRIC MX'RS WHILE BACK.WHAT WAS THE QUESTION AGAIN?

Tear offs are the only way to go in for woods racing. I have been running the trail in a race and ranover a guys roll offs that had nagged a tree and he was streaming them behind him. i nearly toor him off his bike when i ran over it to pass him.

it reminded me of when you see cassette tapes strung down the side of the road. i laughed so hard i nearly pee'd when i saw his head jerk and realized i had done that to him.

so for woods: tear offs

The roll-off system is pretty good but still not without it's problems. rain is the hardest to deal with when using them. If you get water in between the outside of your lense and the rolloff film-you get instant 4D VISION! THEY MAKE A STICK ON DEFLECTOR TO HELP KEEP WATER FROM RUNNING DOWN THE LENSE and in behind the film but I've had better luck making a deflector visor/flap out of good 'ol duct tape. The narrow vision provided by the rolloff film isn't near as bad as you would think,as it's close enough to your eyes that you still have a good view of what's out in front of you.
