The verdict on the 2005 RMZ450

How about old slow guys? I have 32 hours on my '06 RMZ450 and am debating when to do the top end (the power is good, starting is good and it only burns 50cc every 3 hours). Do I need to do the valves and such if they haven't needed to be adjusted? How about the cam chain? I adjust it every 6 hours, but does it need replaced at the same time as the top end?

I've had my 05 RMZ 450 since March 05. It has 64 hours on it with no problems. It would have more hours but I took two major soil samples last year that put me on the sidelines for about 6 months (First injury, my competition took me out, second injury piliot error :bang: ). I change the oil every 3-4 hours, oil filter every other oil change and air filter every ride. The valves are checked every 12 hours and the cam chain is adjusted. Valves are still in spec, however I expect the intake valves will need shimmed the next time they are checked.
Over all the RMZ 450 has shown to be very reliable. There have been some reports of the cylinder walls flaking on the 05 that results in main bearing and or top in damage also. However, these reports have been small in numbers.
Let the suspension break in, it takes about 3 hours, set the sag at 105 mm, put a fuel screw in it and have fun. I also changed gearing from a stock rear 49 tooth to 50. For my local track this allows me to use third in all but the slowest corners and fourth down the longer straights. For me, this set up works well. I love this bike as it made riding fun again! ;)

To clarify, your bike has a fuel screw, its located at the bottom of the carb under the float bowl. However it is near impossible to adjust in its stock form. You can purchase a accessory fuel screw that allows you to make adjustments without a screw driver. It also allows you to make adjustments on the fly. Turning the fuel screw out richens the mixture. Turning the fuel mixture screw in leans the mixture. If the temps are colder, turn the fuel screw in to make richer. If the temps are warmer/hot, turn the fuel screw out to lean the mixture. Most cases, a 1/4 turn either way is all the adjustment you need.
You need to come over and ride some moto with MX547 and myself at River Valley.

The 2005 RM-Z is a good bike. I love mine. A handlebar mounted hot-start would be a useful asset, especially for a racer. DR.D sells a kit for $99.
