Four threatened springsnails in NM and TX have been proposed for listing under the Endangered Species Act. Their habitat is reduced to only four small wetland areas, and oil and gas industries will be opposing their protection, so these species need your support.


I would be willing to drive to NM and TX and pick up these 4 snails and find them a bigger and better wetland, and just how big are these snails, hell the snails in my back yard die from old age just going from one end of the pool to the other.

According to their "forest health" rhetoric, fire suppression has caused excessive numbers of small trees. Stressed by unnatural levels of competition, these tress are more vulnerable to mistletoe and bark beetles. Older trees are threatened by hot fires which use the thickets as "ladders" to leap up into the canopy. Finally, high tree densities create unnatural shade conditions, allowing firs to encroach upon, and eventually replace, ponderosa pine forests.

This is only a partial truth because it focuses too narrowly on tree "health" as it relates to lumber production. It does not consider the myriad problems identified by decades of scientific research: the decline of ponderosa pine old-growth; habitat fragmentation; replacement of native grasses by weedy annuals and shrubs' widespread fish, amphibian, and songbird declines; loss of soil productivity; water pollution; predator control; erosion; and wetland loss.

A recent timber industry proposal to manage the Southwest's National Forests is a good indicator of what it means by "forest health." The Forest Service judged the massive logging proposal to be the best "forest health" option, even though it was also judged the worst choice for wildlife and sensitive species. A competing proposal by state game and fish agencies to protect old-growth and sensitive species, on the other hand, was ranked lower on the "forest health" scale by the Forest Service.

The reason for this discrepancy is that to the timber industry "forest health" means a regulated tree farm, rather than a naturally functioning forest.

The General Accounting Office, research arm of Congress, has over the past two years issued several reports regarding the ability of the Forest Service to implement the National Fire Plan. Two of these reports include critiques of the agency's use of the Fire Plan funding, and a failure to fully implement the Fire Plan. There is also an analysis that shows that environmentalists have appealed only about 1% of Forest Service fuels reduction projects under the National Fire Plan.

Yes, we need them here in California! Why just the other day at lunch, we were all clucking our tongues over the severe and evident shortage of high quality escargot on California's haute cuisine menus. The plain and simple fact is that long before most of us were on this continent, forest fires would occur naturally. They help rebuild the forest by destroying the choking under growth and releasing seeds. Of course these fires were the result of lighning strikes not a careless camper. Ever wonder how the Blackfoot tribe received it's name? ;)

Now about that escargot. I used to like snails until I ate some bad ones at a Restaurant in Crackow, Poland. Spent the entire next day in my hotel room either hunched over or sitting on the commode. :eek:

From my forestry classes, I think a Pine forest is the first stage of a forest. It is natural once the pines have been there for awhile to have the firs move in and eventually take over, part of a cycle that last tens of thousands of years. the end result is and Old growth forest.

The timber industry does not want to see too many thousand year old trees any more, to tough to manage for the short term.

As for the fire, It is a natural cleaning process, the reason the fires get so bad is we try and control them before anything burns, thus once a fire does get out of control their is to much fuel, and stopping it is almost impossible.

Certain species like the lodgePole pine require fire in order to open up the Pine cone in order to release the seeds.

But I'm sure the timber industry, the greenies, and the government are much smarter then Mother nature :think:

Actually, Smith, I think the Ponderosa is another of those that requires a fire to open up the cones. I also remember something about that's why the Ponderosa has such thick bark, to protect it from the brush fires.

Just over the AP, .... 4 lone springsnails in were involved in a head on collision whilst driving from NM on their way to California. It is reported that the 4 snails were to be part of a new all snail band that would have started on tour after spending the summer with Britney Spears choreographer, High Lord Gomer. The names of the deceased have been withheld until the families can be notified.....

Like you mentioned above FIRE is needed for the health of the forest, however I do believe we can and are better at forest management than Mother Nature and I do strongly believe that our USDF, if allowed, can do a better job at it than The CBD or any other enviro-group.

To avoid a long argument, I'm going to say the USDF can do a better job. They need to get the money hungry logging companies out of forest rapagement, I meant management and dictate how the timber will be harvested, not give them a plot map and say pump in a road and take X amount of board feet.

Instead they should say you need to take out X amount of low canopy trees, medium canopy trees, and large canopy trees: and the harvest should be spread out over the whole area in question utlilizing a "Timber Jack(ORV for logging) to limit the amount of hard packed roads, while areas of steep terain shall be logging via air, or highline to avoid erosion. blalalablabalablbalalb, bla.

It will cost more, but I'm willing to pay more for lumber and have a healthy forest for my kids! No matter what anyone thinks the forest does not belong to us, it belongs to our future children. I know I want my grandkids to be able to enjoy a long walk in the woods without crossing a road every 1/4 mile. :think:

How about using recycled materials and steel studs in new houses?.....It may cost a little more and ORKIN will go out of bussiness but on the plus side no more trees cut for wood products......

Good point! First, it's been tried. Simple, there is no profit in residential steel stud construction, more important, ... there is NO political lobby behind the steel stud construction market. It is going to take more than God to change the market.

Not to mention the fact that steel production tends to be a wee bit harder on the environment than timber harvest. Besides since when is cutting trees a bad thing? They do grow back provided sustainabal forestry practices and common sense are used. Dont get the wrong idea. I am not one of those log it all people. I just do not see any thing wrong with timber harvesting. Its a hell of alot better than letting the stuff burn imo.
