I dont personally use one; I use a 5-gal plastic bucket, right-side-up, putting the sprocket-side down into the bucket.
You can buy a bike-tire changing station/stand tho, from Harbor Freight, for probably about what you can make one for...
Here's an idea for a homemade tire changing stand. Mount a 14" automobile wheel (without the tire) onto a work table so that there is enough room in the center of the wheel for your sprocket and then later your brake to drop in without touching the auto wheel. Line the upper lip of the rim (the part of the wheel that will touch your spokes) with either several layers of duct tape or a sliced garden hose. Some people mount a 5/8" threaded pipe in the center of the auto wheel. You can then slide the bike wheel over the pipe to steady the wheel as you change the tire.
You can do the same thing with a bucket. Hope this helps...
After seeing the tire changing video I got a hair up my arse to change out some tires. I used a five gallon bucket. I put a sand bag (two scoops of sand in a trash bag) in the bucket to keep it from moving around. Worked good for me.
