I attended a DNR meeting a couple of weeks ago. A ranger from the White Cloud US Forest Service was there will some bad news. The Holton trail loop will be closed this summer. The USFS has found out that the trail crosses three parcels of private land and needs to be re-routed.
If you live on the west side of the state or were planning to go riding on these trails, be aware of this clossing. It sounded like once the trail was rerouted the loop would be re-opend - no ETA provided.

I had heard a similar thing about Horshoe Lake, which is just north of there. I wonder if the person that told me that got the two mixed up.

Hey Guys !

Funny thing, I remember riding that trail during an enduro no less than ten years ago and a guy was standing out in the middle of nowhere stopping all the riders and threatening them with prosecution for trespassing! It's good to see that our DNR is on top of these issues!

In all fairness, there are some pretty crazy people living in that area. I was shot at several years ago (not far from there) while riding down a two-track that was on the map as a public road. Some idiot decided that he owned it!

KTM033- the systems do not touch. The Holton and Horseshoe loops are not connected to the MCCT (similar to the Evart loop).
If you guys have your most recent TrailRider magazine from the CCC, there is a notice including a map. I do know that Bill Chapin from the CCC is involved in rerouting the trail and getting it reopened ASAP.

Bummed out

Hopefully the Horseshoe Lake trail is not being closed, can anyone confirm that? I'm moving down to the GR area this spring from up here in the Sault. I was starting to sweat there would be no place to ride till I started looking at the DNR trail maps. I did notice the Holton loop (state licence required) does connect to the horseshoe loop (orv sticker only). I'm a CR rider with no provision for licensing. Anybody know for sure?

I don't remember a connection between the Holton and Horshoe loops. Be aware that, while not easily evident, there is a stretch of road on the Horshoe Lake loop as well. All of a sudden the trail kind of ends at the road, and you won't be sure which way to go.

Cedar Creek is also close by which is all non-street-legal. It gets a lot of traffic and whoops up.

Other spots are close to Grand Rapids near Baldwin that are better.
