I've got an '02 RM250, and the owners manual says to use 10/30 (maybe 10/40?)trans oil. However, most all motorcycle gear oil is expressed in 80 or 85w. What is the equivalent/ what would you recommend for the RM in SoCal. I've been using the Honda 80/85 weight, but have a chance to get a case of a different brand quite cheap. Just want to be sure I get the right weight before I buy a bunch of bottles. I change the oil probably every 4 rides, and am fairly gentle on the clutch.

Thanks,

Mark

I'm pretty sure 10W-30 weight is equivalent to 80W gear oil and 10W-40 is equivalent to 85W gear oil. My CR125 likes 75W gear oil even tho my manual recommends 10W-30.

make sure you dont get the "energy conserving" type it will fry clutches. Look on the back of the bottle in the circle thingy. I will say Energy conserving in the bottom half.

Yam3 is right. You might wanna stay away from 10W30 with EC. You'll be fine with 80w or 85w. I use 10w40 automobile oil. No problems.

It's either gonna be 80 or 85w 2 stroke tranny oil, so the ec thing isn't a worry. Guess I'll flip a coin between 80 or 85, and will probably notice no difference.

Thanks,

Mark

Yep you'll probably not notice any difference between the two. Maxima describes their gear oil by this...75W extra light, 80W racing, 85W endurance.

By Maxima's definition, I'm certainly not light weight :ugg: I have no endurance :whiner: and I wish I was racin'. Sounds like 80 to me.

thanks for the info,

I run the Honda HP transmission oil 80w/85w( red bottle) for the CR's in my 99 RM125. I've tried everything from motor oils to ATF and I like this oil the best. I change it every two or three rides and it keeps my bike shifting smooth and easy.(Unless you are trying to find neutral)
Just my 2 cents!

30W engine oil is approximately equivalent to 80W gear oil.

The following chart shows the relationship of "real" viscosity to their
S.A.E. assigned numbers. The relationship of gear oils to engine oils is
also shown.
