TT-R125LE vs TT-R230LE

I just purchased a TT-R125LE and when I signed up for a school I was told that I should have purchased the 230.

I am 61 years old, not very strong, and not very brave.

I am 5 foot 9 inches and 160 lbs.

I have very little experience other than I have had difficulty handeling a XR250.

The instructor says I'm too tall for the TT-R125. Could the problem be solved by changing handle-bars?

This will probably get moved to the What Bike Should I Get forum.

At your size you are a little big for the TTR125LE, but if you don't feel comfortable on the 230 then stay with the 125. The 230 will actually feel fairly similar to the XR250R. It weighs the same but is a little shorter and has a little less motor. Go with what feels comfortable to you. There's no sense going with a bigger bike because of someone else's opinion then crashing, getting hurt and getting out of the sport. You can make the TTR125 a little roomier by getting taller handlebars (Mini High bend would probably be best) and BBR (www.bbrmotorsports.com) makes a bunch of parts (triple clamp, swingarm, tall seat, etc) to make the bike a little bigger.

Just curious - Where are you a law professor at? I swear in in West Virginia shortly and am scheduled to take the July Ohio Bar.

At 5'9" and 160 lbs you are big for the 125, however as the others have stated you are much better off on a bike you are comfortable with. The TT-R125 is an awesome entry level bike and has a huge choice of aftermarket trick goodies available. As for the size as previously mentioned a set of Renthal Mini High bend bars would really help when standing, also possibly a set of bar risers to raise them even more. Down the road if you plan to keep this bike instead of upgrading, when you get more comfortable you will definitely need to upgrade the suspension.

Welcome to the site

Be sure and go to your User CP and update information relating to your location, type of riding, etc. After that grab a spot on the couch and tell us a bit about yourself.

As far as bikes go, go with what is comfortable. Who cares if it is too small. If you are comfortable, enjoy it. If you outgrow it, you can upgrade. I got a KTM 400 on the belief that I "should" be on a 4 stroke after many years of being away from bikes. I tore my foot up pretty bad as a result and was on crutches for 2 months. My fault, my problem, but I kept the bike. Now I have 8 to choose among.

BTW - I have a ttr125 with a 150 kit on it and it is FUN!!!! My daughter rides it, but I am betting she takes my 200 from me soon.

Again, welcome to the site and shout if you have any questions!
