i always read that you should not open the throttle when the bike is not running like when kids jump on a bike and play around. does this really hurt anything? what does it actually do in terms of fuel flowing into or out of the carb? if i am going to tell someone not to do this i guess i should have some facts. thanks.

Doesn't do anything on a 2-stroke however I think if you do it on certain carbs on 4-strokes it will just flood the engine. I'm not sure what models though.

I probably spend more time sitting on my bike in the garage than riding, so if I want to twist the throttle I first turn the gas off...just precautionary

twisting the throttle while the engine is off will flood the engine with gasoline if the carberator has an accletor pump. No two stroke that I heard of has one and most high performance four strokes do.

I dont know why two strokes dont have them but this is why most high performance four strokes have them.
When you open the throttle quickly you lose vacuum and velocity of the air going thru the carburator. So you will have an extremely lean condition for a moment until the rpm of the engine catches up the opening of the throttle. An accelerator pump mechanically squirts fuel into the intake every time you twist the throttle to overcome this lean out condition. If your engine isnt running you are constantly squirting raw gas into it flooding it out.

It has been my experience that when I am sitting in the garage, on my bike, and I twist the throttle; my lips start to vibrate and I make a funny sound??

This is just my opinion, but riding in the garage (pretend or otherwise) is very dangerous and also makes a mockery of the sport. There are already enough folks out there (cagers) that make us out as silly fools with no real purpose in life, not to be taken seriously. Don't give them any more ammunition. Make sure the door is closed.

It can safely say I have had more injuries while 'play riding' (don't let the harmless-sounding term fool you) in the garage than in any real life situation. The riding was was play, the injuries, real and lasting.

Most states have laws on the books prohibiting the use of offroad vehicles within garages, attached or otherwise, carports, parking pads, driveways, showrooms, trailers, etc. In effect, seemingly harmless 'playriding' is criminal activity, punishable by fine, imprisonment, or both, although they are generally not enforced. I pride myself in being an all american law abiding citizen.

If you choose to ignore my own experienced advice, please have enough common sense to put on your full riding gear BEFORE mounting the machine. It may just save your life.

Playriding: you're only cheatin' yourself.

On a more serious note:

Shutting off the fuel supply and letting your machine run a few minutes until it surges lean would reduce the risk of flooding, you wouldn't have to let the carb run totally dry, just shut it down when it starts to surge.

I often rotate the throttle a few times before a ride just to check it for smooth operation.

Sincerely,

Joe Chief:) :) :)

Hey guy please dont ever twist the throttle on a yam 426. before carrying out the BK mod on sons race bike we checked the fuel pump time. When you blip the throttle the pump squirts fuel down the intake for 7 SECONDS. As you can guess all you need is some nerd pretending he`s Tim Ferry to ruin a days racing.
