Upcoming ride, no time... Worn out Boyesen Reeds or Good Stockers

Hey guys i pulled my reeds today because the bike has been giving me fits getting it started.

Sure enough the reeds in it are shot, they are floating above the block just a bit. The boyesen reeds i need are gonna take a week and a half to get in and i have two rides and a friendly race planned in between that time, so i am trying to get the best performance with what i have for now.

I have the stock reed block too, with a good set of fiberglass reeds.

What should i do to get the best performance with what i have? I'm guessing stock reeds are going to run better than worn out Performance reeds.

I have already order the boyesen replacements too, so no, this will not be permanent.

But who knows... help a guy out.

Stock reeds in good condition will cold start much better than worn out performance reeds. Will probably perform better, too, but I think the main difference will be with the starting.

ok, that will probably be what i have to do...


what kind of jetting will i need to put in the bike.

I'd stick with the standard as well, with my bike and aftermarket reed block (boyesen) i stuck with standard jetting although they actually recommend leaner, if you have a aftermarket exhaust they recommend richer so they tend to balance each other out.

Just flip the reeds over as long as there's no chips.

Yeah you can flip them I did them on my bike, better throttle response, started way better cold and hot and the best part is it saved me 40 bucks.

You can do it, but it is a temporary fix. It'll get you by until the new ones come in. Just make sure they aren't chipped up, or flipping won't do you any good.

ok, i changed the reeds...

checked the

-spark plug
-carb
-top end compression

and i still doesnt want to start...

im really starting to get confused. What else is there to do?

I know the jetting is probably off a bit but i cant get it running long enough to adjust or even find out what need to be done.

I will kick it a bunch of times... it will finally spitter and sputter and then peeter out. When it is running it sounds like it is under water and im getting a ton of splooge out of the pipe.

I just cant get it going long enough to run... pissing me off

help please!

did you check the spark plug for spark or something other?
are you sure theres gas flowing to the engine?
did you flood it in your many attempts to start it?
is the kill switch jammed or are the wires tangled?

go through your bike and just make sure everything is connected properly.

this happened to me before, and i was ready to blow 300-400 dollars on a new CDI, when I found that a wire somehow got disconnected from the CDI. I re-attached it, and it fired right up.

are you sure theres gas flowing to the engine? has to be i flooded it trying to start it.


did you flood it in your many attempts to start it? Yes, but im getting good spark so i dont know what the deal is.

Since the bike is getting good spark that kinda rules out the igition....

so frustrating :bang: :bang:

with that attitude, that's why your bike isn't getting fixed.

check it over. gas + compression + spark.

have you thrown a new spark plug in there yet?
have you tested the stator/cdi?

if theres a ton of splooge coming out the end, then the jetting is bad. why don't you re-do your jetting, or wait til the reeds that the bike is jetted for to come in?

patience is key.

If its shooting splooge your so rich it wont start. Take your slide out and see what clip your needle is set at. Lean it out by putting the little clip up a notch or two.
