What is the upside down "V" shaped tube about 3" long welded to the frame right in front of the right side cover over the exhaust pipe? Is this just some kind of guard for the pipe / silencer???

AHH Grasshopper that is an ancient Japanese secret. ;)

I have heard about every use you could dream up, BUT the only real reason I can see is what they said. A grab handle. Another believable reason I have heard was that is was used on the Street version in Aisa for something.

It's a grab handle. Whenever I try to lift someone else's bike I always instinctively go for the grab handle - and too my amazement it’s never there. All bikes should that nifty handle.

Every time I put my bike on the stand I wonder why all bikes don't have one. It has also proved handy for pulling it out of bottomless mudholes. :)
