Water pump seal replacement...Help

I have a small amount of coolant leaking into the trans, not much seldom loose much coolant, maybe an ounce every now and then, but the oil gets milky. Can I replace the water pump seal by only removing the water pump and impeller, or do I have to remove the case cover?

what year/model of bike?
I'd say that if the coolant is leaking into the case then the seal on the backside is what's leaking, which would require removal of the side cover.

You are wasting your time if you don't replace both seals at the same time. Removal of the engine cover is neccessary to do this on most bikes. You need to take care of this. It may not seem like much water, but it only takes a small amount of water over an extended time period to ruin the tranny bearings and gall the gear surfaces. While you are at it, inspect the impellor shaft carefully for any wear or grooving where the seals contact it. If you can detect any wear, replace this as well. It is not expensive, and will keep the new seals from failing prematurely.

sorry...

It's a 1995 KX125 and I pulled the waterpump cover and the impeller looks great but the outer (water) seal is a bit stiff leaving a little gap around the shaft. It was no problem removing the outer seal, the inner seal looks OK so I think I will just replace the outer and keep an eye on it to see if it still leaks.
Is there any other way that coolant can enter the trans on a KX 125?

That is the only way water can get into the tranny. If you already have it all apart, why not spend the $5 for the inner seal and be done with it?

Thanks Spanky...

Thats the point, I dont have it all apart, just the water pump cover.
I dont think I can get the other seal out without removing the case and
I dont want to do that at this time. If just replacing the outer seal doesnt fix it, then I will have to.

that's kinda a tough seal.

the coolant side seal on my boy's kaw was a real wide one. and would of been real tough with out removing the hole cover and impeller, shaft.as a matter of fact even reaching through the oil seal and bearing driving out the coolant seal took some effort!

wasnt a problem

I popped the impeller off and used a jewlers screwdriver to lever out the pump side seal.
