water pump seal

On my kx250, there is two water pump seals, one to keep out the oil and one to keep the water out of the oil. The oil seal is larger. Now I know that these have to be put in a certain way. Which sides of the seals face the oil and which side faces the water?

I have a manual but it only tells me that the long one goes in first. And thats it.

are the seals different on each side?

is one side have like a small grove all the way around...?
if so the side with the groove will face inwards, while the side with the "lettering" will face out, which means the one that goes in first will have the groove facing you, and the second will have the groove facing away from you..
