WATER

1. 75% of Americans are chronically dehydrated. (Likely applies to
half world population.)

2. In 37% of Americans, the thirst mechanism is so weak that it is
often mistaken for hunger.

3. Even MILD dehydration will slow down one's metabolism as much as
3%.

4. One glass of water will shut down midnight hunger pangs for
almost 100% of the dieters studied in a University of
Washington study.

5. Lack of water, the #1 trigger of daytime fatigue.

6. Preliminary research indicates that 8-10 glasses of water a day
could significantly ease back and joint pain for up to
80% of sufferers.

7. A mere 2% drop in body water can trigger fuzzy short-term memory,
trouble with basic math, and difficulty focusing
on the computer screen or on a printed page.

8. Drinking 5 glasses of water daily decreases the risk of colon
cancer by 45%, plus it can slash the risk of breast
cancer by 79%, and one is 50%less likely to develop bladder cancer. Are
you drinking the amount of water you should
every day?

COKE

1. In many states (in the USA) the highway patrol carries two gallons
of Coke in the trunk to remove blood from the
highway after a car accident.

2. You can put a T-bone steak in a bowl of coke and it will be gone
in two days.

3. To clean a toilet: Pour a can of Coca-Cola into the toilet bowl
and let the "real thing" sit for one hour, then flush
clean. The citric acid in Coke removes stains from vitreous china.

4. To remove rust spots from chrome car bumpers: Rub the bumper with
a rumpled-up piece of Reynolds Wrap
aluminum foil dipped in Coca-Cola.

5. To clean corrosion from car battery terminals: Pour a can of
Coca-Cola over the terminals to bubble away the
corrosion.

6. To loosen a rusted bolt: Apply a cloth soaked in Coca-Cola to the
rusted bolt for several minutes.

7. To bake a moist ham: Empty a can of Coca-Cola into the baking
pan, wrap the ham in aluminum foil, and bake.
Thirty minutes before the ham is finished, remove the foil, allowing the
drippings to mix with the Coke for sumptuous
brown gravy.

8. To remove grease from clothes: Empty a can of coke into a load of
greasy clothes, add detergent, and run through a
regular cycle. The Coca-Cola will help loosen grease stains. It will
also clean road haze from your windshield.

FOR YOUR INFORMATION:

1. The active ingredient in Coke is phosphoric acid. Its pH is 2.8.
It will dissolve a nail in about four days. Phosphoric
acid also leaches calcium from bones and is a major contributor to the
rising increase in osteoporosis.

2. To carry Coca-Cola syrup (the concentrate) the commercial truck
must use the Hazardous Material place cards
reserved for highly corrosive materials.

3. The distributors of coke have been using it to clean the engines
of their trucks for about 20 years!

Now the question is, would YOU like a glass of water or coke
?????????????????????

I don't drink pop/cola much anyway. I am allergic to caffeine. :(

But mixing it with Captain Morgan's completely counteracts all of those bad effects, right? :yeehaw:

From snopes: However, all the insinuations about the dangers these acids might pose to people who drink Coca-Cola ignore a simple concept familiar to any first-year chemistry student: concentration.

I'd be more concerned about the sugar concentration. :scream:

I gave up Coke/all sodas about two months ago (which was tough to do at first) and simultaneously cut back on granulated sugar. Started using local honey to sweeten coffee and tea. In the span of about 2 weeks I noticed my pants were looser fitting. In my estimation I lost about 3-4 pounds just from cutting off Cokes. I, like Vic, was more worried about the sugar content. I've also cut back on the little bottles of OJ and apple juice. Incredible how much sugar those have as well. Some have more than a can of Coke.

Thanks alot Smit-dog, I was just about to quit drinking cokes entirely until I read that all that garbage wasn't true. I have already cut back, but if that stuff were true, I could quit cold turkey. Oh well, I really prefer Dr. Pepper and Pepsi over Coke anyways.

I have to agree with kbud, most of that stuff is urban legend.
We tried the Coke and nail thing in chemistry class...9 weeks later the nail was still quite intact with no visible damage.

Any info on Diet Pepsi?? :)

Coke does contain a lot of inorganic phosphate, which by virtue of its valence and the pH of coke, is usually associated with proton in one way or another. There's certainly enough phos to raise phosphorous levels of dialysis patients quite a bit, and if I catch them drinking it, it's 10 lashes.

The significance of that is that we use calcium based salts as phosphorus binders, to prevent absorption of phosphorus and raise serum calcium levels. All these people are hyperphosphatemic and hypocalcemic chronically, since the kidneys they no longer have, would normally convert 25-OH D to 1,25 (OH)2 D (vitamin D), which raises serum calcium concentration, and directly inhibits parathyroid hormone secretion. What ensues is unchecked hyperparathyroidism, which leaches calcium from the bone, causes renal osteodystrophy, pruritis, etc....

Well, you guessed it--if you drink a lot of coke, you'll bind the calcium in your gut and prevent its absorption. And it will, therefore, contribute to negative calcium balance and cause osteoporosis. The other issue, is the acid load comes off renally, by augmentation of distal tubular proton secretion, which causes a secondary hypercalciuria (urinary calcium wasting) and further contributes to the problem.

Soda is crap. I thank God my mom wouldn't let us have it growing up. None of us like it. It tastes awful to me.

I used more of it to free up seized pistons in junkyard V8's than to poison my body with. ;)

Beer, particularly dark beer, has recently been found to perform as well as red wine as far as the antioxidant capabilities are concerned. It improves endothelial function/NO release and response and decreases risk of de novo thrombosis of arteries.

A beer a day reduces kidney stone formation by 40%, by causing inhibition of ADH release, the formation of a dilute/large volume urine, and thus decreasing urine lithogenic potential.
