My reeds need to be replaced in my KX310. I ride woods and would like a smoother power delivery. The reed valve is OEM and I am just looking for some replacement reeds. Is the fiberglass one's what I am looking for?
I had a 98 yz125 that had vforce reeds, I thought that they were gettig ragged ,so I bought a new boysen reed cage and throat, the boysen set made my powerband a little smoother and more useable!
The reed valve systems of V-Force and Boyesen have both given me good results, although those systems require spending some bucks. If looking for reed petals alone, for the woods...I've found Carbon Tech's "low-end" reeds deliver good results. (That was a few years ago though...I THINK they're still in business.)
Bandit I use the Boyeson pro series reeds on my 01 KX250 and my 125, They help both bikes on the bottom end, and seem to smooth out the band. I also use a powervalve chamber spacer on my 250, that seems to smooth out the hit also. Hope this helps!!!
Got the spacer from Boyeson, it was around 25 to 30 bucks. Ill tell you, if you have access to some aluminum stock, you could make your own, i could give you dimensions in the morning, (thickness). I didnt think it did much till I took it off for the ice last year, ended up putting it right back on, It softens the hit, and seems to add torque.
That is lot thicker than I thought it would be. I was thinking like 5-8mm. Are you positive that you measured just the spacer? 15mm is over a half inch. I already made a template for it. Ummmm....I might have to get a longer fuel line for 15mm.
Bandit, wrong spacer, you are thinking of the REED spacer, I am talking about a powervalve chamber spacer. It is on the left side of the cylinder, it looks like a cover(because it is). you space THAT cover out 15mm. I will post a pic for you in the morning.
Does the spacer lose power in a certain part of the power band, or does it just improve the bottom and leave the rest of the power band the way it was?

In my experience it is subtle, but the transition from low to mid is smoother, the bottom end feels stronger, and the top is still there. I run this with a FMF sst pipe and turbine core silencer. I ran with a flywheel weight, but have now taken that off.(Didnt like it). Like I said , I didnt think it did anything till I took it off for ice racing, and after a couplr rides put it right back on(the spacer). It is subtle , but it helps the bottom to mid transition.
I have found that the pipe makes a huge difference on these bikes too. I had a stock pipe, good bottom and mid , NO top. Went with the pro circuit, no bottom HARD hit to mid range and good top. FMF SST little soft on the bottom, GREAT midrange and top. Put 2 stage reeds on , and powervalve spacer, Got alot of my bottom back, smoothed power output, the bike now is like a fast revving 4 stroke.
Unfortunately , I bought a Gorr built KX 144, and now only use the 250 for the ice and play riding, the 144 is my woods bike. The 144 is AMAZING also. If you can do like Bandit and make a spacer up, give it a try , I think you'll be impressed.
