I rode a stationary bike for 4 of the six weeks I was in a cast. It made a big difference when the plaster came off.

- deep water running is great. Don't bother buying the floatation vest, just put a kickboard under each arms. wear a rash guard.

- Stationary cycling. Don't risk reinjuring yourself by crashing on a non stationary bike

- Core muscle work. pilates.

- lots of MX videos to burn images into your mind

just my $.02

unless you are a pro and make you living riding - i think you should reconsider racing immediately after recovery. you should allow some time for rehab of muscles and some non-injured time on the bike.

i asked my ortho dr why my suggested recovery time was double (or more) that of what you hear of pro's doing when i was willing to drop all and dedicate time to physical therapy and his reply was - well, if you had NO other way of making a living, i would say get back on the bike and ride (so you can pay my bill...)

as for workouts - stationary bike is great - i use both schwin arodyne (can do arms too) and bike rollers with and without a stationary bike mount. swimming is great rehab with little added stress and i lift using machines (no spotter needed)

Depending on how far along you are, water and massage therapy worked wonders for my broken leg. Get well soon!

just be careful and don't take chances - realize that you will fatigue faster and this will lead to mistakes, so monitor your pace and ride accordingly.

you must have a kinder ortho doc as mine told me that if i ride injured, to do him a favor and ride w/o my helmet so that he will not have to see me again...

good luck!
