Where can I get started in riding?

I'm an avid sledder and now I'm looking into dirt biking, it looks awesome and I'm stoked. But I don't know where to start... bike size, gear, other details? Any tips for this gal?

Site is a little slow currently, but you should check out the "what bike" and "womens" forums. There are a lot of people with experience on choosing bikes and many more opinions.

It all depends on what you want to ride on, your size and aggresiveness.

Try to include the following info in your first post
1) your physical size (both height and weight are important)
2) How physical / aggressive are you ?
3) what do you plan to ride- MX/SX tracks, woods, fields with friends or ?????
4) Do you have any riding experience?
5) Do you think you will race ?
6) Are you mechanically inclined and will you be doing your own bike work?
7) Do YOU have a preferance to a brand/ motor choice (2 or 4 stroke)?
8) Do you have a dealer close by your home that you might use and what brand(s) does he carry?
9) How much do you plan to spend on a bike?
10) anything else that you think would help form an opinion

This info won't guarentee a perfect bike choice but it will sure stear the answers you get closer to the ideal bike.

Well, it depends on what size you are. If u have never riden a bike in ur life then dont go out and buy a 250. and if ur not planning on racing then i think its stupid to waste ur money on a pipe and graphics ect.
For gear i would start out with a helmet, goggles and gloves, then get pants, jersey, boots, ect after u start getting better.

Boots are real important here, at least get some work boots with good ankle support. Even before the goggles. I have seen what pegs can do to legs, covering the shins with more than jeans is a real good idea.

The women's forum here as stated will likely help you get sorted on bike, gear etc. Here in Manitoba our MX association holds riding clinics in the early part of the spring, perhaps there is something similar in Alberta? Another site that doesn't have anywhere near the breadth of information as this one but is close to local (BC based)for you is mxnorth.ca. There may be some other female AB riders there.

Well I'm 5'6, 125lbs and I'm physically agressive. I know how to handle a machine as I quad and I can throw my sled around quit well so my strength is surprisingly good (considering my size). The womens forum had one good link to bike types, etc but I dont find it that supportive otherwise. Thanx for the alternate site "Chili". I also appriciate imput from men because you guys have alot more suggestions and it seems like the ratio of suggestions are higher 1 to 10. It also seems like there's a wider variety of experience and support. Again thanx.

Your the same size as my wife. She is pretty agressive also. Also Canadian, I wonder if there is a link. At any rate if you are still looking for info on a bike I will help all that I can.
