I'm new to dirt bike riding and I was wondering if anyone could help me decide on which bike to get. Im looking for something used and around $1500, and it HAS to be reliable, I'm 6'1" 185 so dont go suggesting a mini bike. I'm think I want a 4 stroke and it doesn't have to be too fast just where I dont bog it down that much..I want it for trails and small jumps not motoX racing. Some people have suggested xr250s but say they are kind of weak and then they suggest a xr400.. you think a 250 is fast enough ?

The 250 R is a great bike to learn on. For your size though, you will likely want more power in a short time. The 400 is a bit heavier but will serve you well and both are very reliable. You may not find one for that price range but you never know.
BTW, Welcome to DRN. You will find a great deal of good, reliable info and great people here. This post will likely get moved to the "What bike do I get..." Forum. Enjoy. :)

I agree w/BSWIFT. Also, make sure you take someone knowledgeable with you. Honda's are great, but even a poorly maintained Honda can be a ticking time bomb. I bought my first bike all by myself. It was an '89 CR250. I didn't know what to look for, & ended up with more than a few problems- some of them I'm too embarrased to mention. But the simple ones- check the tranny oil to see if it's at least been changed recently, same for the air filter. Ask the seller questions like how often did they service those last two items, etc. Hopefully you're more savvy than I was (or at least smart enough to take someone with you who is).

Maybe consider a KDX too? On older one, if well taken care of, should serve you well. Check Canadian Dave's Just KDX forum & do a little research there. You'll probably be able to find one of those for the price you're looking for. Just remember, though- in most cases you get what you pay for.

I would have to say a kdx220 would be very good for you. they have plenty of power and if u buy a pipe the really go. they have a much easier to ride powerband compared to a 250. they r mainly for woods, and you could jump them alot more then any xr. plus it has about as much power as a xr400 but alot lighter
