Windows XP?

Just bought an HP Pavilion XT993- 1.3 Athlon-128meg- XP home edition. My problem is something is eating all the memory. When I open the task manager it shows available memory @ 9000-23000 with no programs running, off-line. Can't figure out how to eliminate background/start-up programs. The only thing showing on the task-bar next to the clock is the volume so I'm lost. Been to the HP & Microsoft sites and their suggestions didn't work. Or I'm just too dense to understand the instructions.:uh: :o As I am typing this (online) memory reads : (Total 114160)--(Available 18036 and varying slightly)--(System Cache 42344)- (Processes 21) Help:eek:

The problem is that there isnt any memory to eat up :confused:

Hey Lew, go into windows , then systems , then find msconfig , open it , go to the startup tab , open it , now uncheck everything that has a check, you do not need them loading in the background.

you will not lose any of this at all

XP really needs 256meg to run properly.

I'm using Windows 98 which should use less memory then XP and I am currently using 210Mb of 512Mb!:scream:
So I would get yourself some more memory if you want to make full use of that 1.3GHz AMD Heat Generator!

PS. What temperature is your AMD running at, do you know?

my 1.4 tbird runs in the low 50's ° C which is like 120° F. Also Windows 98 doesnt use more than 256 Mb of ram at any time.

I take it you mean Windows 98 alone can only use 256 because right now I am using 376Mb RAM, 64Mb Virtual Memory and 149Mb Paging File. Of course this is only allocated memory but it still means less memory available to run other programs...
I am getting 32° C from my 1.4 Athlon and about 36° C when I overclock to 1.7GHz although I have a couple extra fans in my case.:aj:

Yeah, I really think Dell are the best PCs around although the last few I bought I built myself because I can completely customise them, and I work for a PC company so parts come cheap enough...

Thanks all!! I have another 128 meg on order, guess I should have sprung for 256, as I suspected she was running a little lean.:( :eek:

I've tried the msconfig deal about a hundred different combinations but when I get the memory up in the 40,000 range I can't connect to my ISP. It just sits there going:uh: :uh: I must be shutting something down that it needs.

Don't know on the temp, but maybe I'll try to check on another fan while I'm stuffing the memory in. Thanks guys!

128 probably not the problem

windows XP may recommend using at least 256, but it is a memory optimizing system....I think you either have memory that was bad when you bought it, or something else (i.e. virus is eating it). I run perfectly ok on 128......and unless you have 6000 start programs running once the OS is booted it should run fine...I'd try a different stick of memory..worked for a buddy here--Good Luck!!

I've run a virus scan several times in the last week and it was clean. Don't have to work Sat so I'll have some time to mess with it then. Memory should be here by then. As I'm writing this it shows 26,500 available-- 41,200 Cache.

I'm not much of a computer geek but I am stubborn and I'll get this thing to work if I have to break out the porting tools. ;)

snackbar54, I think you hit it right on the head, just put another 128 meg in and it went to 124,000 meg available. Think I will get another 256 and use it to replace the orginal ram. The only things running on start-up are igfxTray &
hpsysdrv. I think they have to run or it won't work at all.

Think you have it bad. This is with a XP-Home, 366 Celeron, 96 RAM, 8mb Diamon Viper Video Card. :aj:
