My son had a 97 he got after he turned 9. I cut 2 inches off the fork springs and reversed the suspension triangle for the rear. This will limit the travel but is still very safe and rideable. This got us a level ride about the height of an XR80.
About 6 months ago and before I sold it, I installed two 7/16 deep well sockets above the springs and put the fork caps back on, as well as returning the shock triangle back to the proper fit. The front was stiffer than stock but handled the bumps and jumps much better than it did at stock.
He rode the bike a few more months and is now on an 85.
Your next project will be easing the clutch pull.
