Is it normal for the primary sprocket on a 2000 XR200 to have some wobble / play in it with the chain off? The bolts are tight but I can wiggle it on the shaft - normal? Thanks

Hey,
The sprocket mounts in the counter shaft splines, which keep it from rotating. A bit of side to side wobble is normal. Pay attention though, over time, the splines can wear, and eventually strip, causing possibly severe tranny problems.

Speedy, i dont think ALL bikes have "floating front sprockets?
I could be wrong but i think most modern MX'rs use the "direct bolt on" arrangment.
And yes, the slines could eventually wear down, but my '82 XL500R has this arrangment and is still o.k. after 20 years.
<knock wood>

I have welded more sprockets onto countershafts than I like to admit. Mostly on ATC 200 models, but the XR200 uses the same sorry mounting system. Wooble + Time = Stripped Splines.

The bigger shafts will run longer as on On Any Sundays' XR500 (more surface) but the XR200 has a very small shaft.

The first time it strips, you can use two fixing plates to get by for a little longer, but it won't be long before you will be in the same shape again.

Welding the sprocket is a hack-job, but what are you gonna do? Ruin the shaft?:p

My 99 xr250r's front sprocket also wobbles from side to side but not forward and backwards (spining directions). You guys are saying that it is ment to be like this and it is fine ? or should I do something about it ? :silly:
