Xr200r engine Cr125 chassis

I looked through a good chunk of the pages on this form and I didn't see a topic like this I hope i didn't miss it if there is one.

I was just wondering if anyone has done the engine swap from a Xr200 to a Cr125 rolling frame and if they were happy with it or any issues with it. thanks.

I think the vast majority of folks would like the CR125 engine much better:)

That said, the older XR200's actually had much more compotent chassies than the current models and I belive had some commonality with the CR's of the time (late 1980's). They also made a bit more power, but were a pita to work on with the dual carbs.

I just don't want the 2 stroke engine quite yet im happy with my Xr200 speed wise and everything but its not the best thing in the world to jump and i want to try some MX so instead of buying a new 125 or 250 i was just going to swap.

Actually it would probably be cheaper to sell the xr 200 and get a 125.. And the 200 will probably not have enough acceleration to clear jumps on most tracks.. The 125 isnt scarry fast though... But if thats what you want it sounds like a great project.. Just a couple of things to consider,, is the 200 narrow enough to sit in the frame..is it short enough to get under the 125s gas tank .. its kinda tight... and can you get someone to weld aluminum..(the new 125s are aluminum).. and one last thing where are you going to get a good 125 rolling chasis without an engine. and what are you going to do with the old frame off the 200

The pictures just make me want to do it more, I did some more research and read that other people that have done the swap have been really happy with it so it all depends on which comes up first a 125 w/o or a blown engine or a 125 in my price range both win win situation :)

I'd rather have the XR200 in the 125 chassis. Would be a KILLER trail bike.

If the XR engine has the swingarm pivot going through the engine cases like the CR125 engine, and the shaft is the same diameter, the swap shouldn't be too hard.

Yeah, you'll have some cutting and welding in your future, but I'm hoping that you expected that much.

And as the Pred' mentioned, it will be a killer trail bike.

I'd recommend looking for one of the older steel-framed cr125's to work with; it'll be easier to weld on, and cost you alot less. That little xr200 motor doesn't need the latest mx suspension bits either -- I believe the cr was steel until '97..

It would indeed be a sweet trail bike which is mostly what i do which was why i was leaning towards the swap, yes i do know i have a bit of cutting and welding and i will defiantly be leaning towards a metal frame but it could still be done w/ an aluminum just a bit longer to take it to work so it could be welded. My main concern is finding a rolling chassis I cant find one for fairly cheap or a not so expensive 125. I posted a wanted add on the wanted fourms so mabey someone has what im looking for. After i find that its pretty much home free

By the way, you might consider other brands of 125 frames, to increase your chances of finding a good deal -- I actually saw a xr200 motor stuffed into a kx125 frame once..

I know it can be done(by now i do atleast) but what I am really looking for is some feedback from someone who has done it and is happy with it or is unhappy with it. As it has been said before anything can be done with a torch and a welder and some fabrication so anyone with some feedback? :bang:

Yeah,, i agree with the steel frame.. Until 97 it was steel and from what i heard that bike absolutely ripped. So you can fab up everything, get thr frame it powdercoated. And if you have any money send the motor to e
ric gorr..

A cr250 would work also I just need a bike to do it too no one has a bike w/o an engine or a cheap bike. I dont see the point in buying a new bike then ripping the motor out and putting mine in but if i could find a cheap one it would be a great project. i posted a wanted ad and looked through the classifieds but no luck so far.

Buy a whole bike. Remove the engine/carb/electronics and sell it on e-Bay. You'll probably get about 75% of what you paid for the bike for the engine kit. Now you have a rolling chassis to use for your conversion.

When you're done, dispose of the XR chassis remains (in bits, not whole) in the same way.

Talk to Bill at Dirt Bike Supply in Pelham, AL. He installed an XR200 engine in an older YZ250F frame. It looks very tidy, and he's been riding it for at least 4 years. I'll PM the number to you.

I've already seen complete YZ250F frames with blown engines in the $900 range.
