Hello

I have a 1994 XR250 which is not running too well at the moment. After cracking the back mudguard on thursday I decided to give it a bit of a service while it was off the road. when giving quick bursts on the throttle it never gave good response so i took the carb off and stripped it. i cleaned all of the insides and nozzles with petrol and an air compressor. other things i did were clean the air filter etc.

the problem is, the bike doesnt idle well at all now. when kicking it over i can hear a hissing type sound coming from the carb and also when it runs. when it goes, it will splutter as you cut the revs and die. it runs very bad and i wish i never took the carb off because it was running fine before now.

i would greatly appreciate it if i could get some advice on this please. i have been off the road since thursday and eager to go riding again!

cheers in advance

Check your intake maniford.

Over time, the rubber part will harden and can seperate from the metal plate that bolts to the head. Try moving the carbs up and down by hand and look for a crack between the rubber and the metal plate. Or remove the manifold and check it.

Hi guys

I checked the carb seals and they are fine. The carb has been taken off and put back on four times and still the same symptons. when cranking the engine over you can hear a distinct hiss sound of air leaking or sucking from somewhere. I inspected the manifolds closely and they are also fine.

are there anymore suggestions on what can be don?

cheers

It is normal to hear a little bit of air blowing past the rings when you kick the engine over slowly, but if you can hear air hissing from the carbs you may want to check your valve clearance. Especially the intakes.

Cheers mate for your help.

Do you know the correct valve clearances for the bike? (94 XR250R), i have an owners manual but it doesnt mention anything about valve clearances.

thanks again

I don't have the proper specs for that model but, you should be safe with .002 on the intake and .003 on the exhaust.

You may want to buy a service manual so that you know the proper proceedure for checking your valves.

Good luck.
